And Uncle Shimano Comes through again...(and a whoopsie)Bikezilla

As many of you may know the first run on the XTR hydros had a problem with the pistons not retracting. I called Shimano and they gladly said they'd replace them no fuss. I sent them in, and they sent a new front right away with all the mounting hardware and a set of new pads. Nice. They then advised me that the rear was b/o'd until the end of January. Eck! well suprise! Today, I came home to find a whole new rear setup sitting in an overnight package, including the rotor, mounting HW, and two sets of pads! Big-up for Shimano. They did me good again.

Now I'm a little confused about the part numbers...I thought I sent them one of each: BR-M965 and BR-M966 (not entirely sure). I thought one number was the front and the other was the rear. What I got back was a BR-M965 and a BR-M965-F. Well the M965-F is clearly the same shape as the rear I sent out, and the M965 is clearly the same as the front brake I sent out. (I took pictures of the F&R brakes before I sent them in) Strangely I do not see a M965-F reference in the manuals, I guess I'll comb their website.

Now for the whoopsie: I sent the hose banjo-bolt in with the brakes. The hardware packages do not include them. I guess they come with the hoses. WHOOPS! Too bad they didn't catch that. I sent them to keep the brake from leaking fluid in the package. Oh well. Time to give Uncle-S a call.

BTW I know this must have been asked a million times, but can I use regular mineral oil, like the kind from the corner store?

Can you use it...probably. Should you use it? IMHO, no. You'll likely void the Shimano warranty if you use anything other than Shimano mineral oil...doesn't seem worth it to me.
Tnx...I'll go for the real thing. nm.Bikezilla

I wouldn't chance it....SS_MB-7

You've just used the warranty and you may need it again (hopefully not, though). Using non-Shimano mineral oil (yes, it's damn pricey...at least here in Canada will void your warranty. I wouldn't chance it.

(I only offer this as I think the XTR and XT systems use the same fluid)

I use XT brakes and have used generic mineral oil in them for two years with absolutely zero problems. (J&J unscented mineral oil to be specific)

Is it exactly the same as Shimano fluid? I don't know. It isn't red but that can't possibly be relevant. It does work and it 'feels' exactly the same to me, and it hasn't damaged my seals in the least.

I bought a bottle for $1 and have enough to set up 100 brakes.
Red? hmmm,Bikezilla

My break fluid isn't red AFAIK. I didn't set it up, the bit that came out when I detached the brake seemed clear to me. I'll have to take another look and check w/my LBS. Shimano just told me they highly recommend using their fluid. (no suprise)

Thanks

Well, my Shimano mineral oil is pinkish, not clear....SS_MB-7

The Shimano mineral oil that came with my brakes (XTR/XT) and from my LBS is pinkish, not clear.

Yo BZ, something to ponder/try...Ak Chris

... so we know that if you run a front caliper on the rear, you can run a 140mm rotor. What if you sort of reversed it, by running the 180mm rotor, and put a rear caliper on the front? Could you run the 180... and not need an adaptor?

I'm curious because I'm pondering the move to a larger rotor and not looking forward to the hassles you had with your XTR calipers and the adaptor. Any way you could check the fit, maybe take a pic if I ask nice? BTW, my mineral oil is pink, but I'm sure the color is an additive.
WTF? ;^)Bikezilla

Okay, I'll admit it. I'm a little sleepy... You want me to try to mount the rear brake on the front to see if it will fit the 180mm rotor w/o an adaptor? Sounds like fun. If I can find the time, I'll give it a look this and let you know. I have the fork off the bike, getting ready to change the oil. Also since I don't have the banjo bolts yet, I can only eyeball the alignment.

Just to clarify my setup, I'm running a Z1QR20 which according to 'Zoke is *made* for a 180mm rotor. As I understand the owner @ my LBS he could not get the 6" rotor to meet up. But the adaptor for the 8" rotor was not for the reach, it is for the horizontal alignment.(parallel to the axle) I will be playing with the build-up for the first time. So my answer may not be 100%

Shimano had told me they were aware some people had problems getting the XTR and the Z1QR20 matched. You should be okay with other forks. (but may still need an adaptor for 8" rotors anyway)
If the Z1qr is made for the larger rotor...Ak Chris

... then never mind. I thought it was a larger rotor adaptor. Your setup will probably not answer my question. But you did get what I was saying, and in theroy it would work. I'll probably have to just get the larger rotor and try it out myself. Without a fork designed for a 160mm rotor, your results will not match mine. Thanks anyway.
If you do buy an adaptor, get the GRC...Bikezilla

Even the Shimano tech I spoke to had high praise for them.

And then Big-S closes the loop...Bikezilla

Called them on the 8th. The tech found some banjo bolts and mailed them first class. Got them on the 10th.

Big thanks Shimano!
