Can someone confirm this?...CulBaire

I have been told many, many times by bikeshop peoples, riding buddies, in fact I have even hear it's recomended by brake manufactures... etc... Putting a smidgen of Extreme melting point/ waterproof Grease on the brake's pistons, behind the pads to stop the pads/rotors from "droning" when there is no presure on the lever (i.e when coasting or rolling the bike).

Is it safe to say that statement is correct/ recomended?

.....would make the brakes "drone" when the brake is not applied? If pads are touching the rotor on any brake, other than the Magura Gustav, then they are not set up correctly.

Maybe it's better to fix the cause than the problem?

Mike:

That "droning" (if thats what you'd call the noise), is caused by Vibration from what I can tell, one of the pads slighly touching the rotor... It does this becasue the magnet attatched to the piston is actually loose. This causes the pad to loosely and slightly touch the rotor (it cant fall out I checked), making the vibrating, "drone" noice.

When there is presure against the pad (i.e fromt the lever), it is tight and therefore cant vibrate... Thats my thoughts on the problem anyways.

Ohhhh and Just for knowings sake, the brakes are Avid's 2002(I think) BB Discbrakes.

....I rest my case. The problem (loose pads) should be fixed (contact Avid) rather than applying a band-aid (in this case some vibration-dampening goop).

Just superglue the magnet back in place!shiggy©®™

Clean up everything very well first. Simple job.

i Do not use grease!
You will have no brakes if any gets on the pads/rotors
not a good ideaBrakemeister

I wouldnt do it to my own brakes ( and therefore not even thinking of suggesting it to others )

too easy some of the goop finds it way around the pads and makes for an interesting braking experience.....

I would say that there shouldn't be any oil based liquids anywhere near the disc.
