Hayes Uneven Pad Engagement/Retraction(3 posts)

Hayes Uneven Pad Engagement/RetractionIrksome

I have 1000 dirt miles on these and wonder if they might just have to be rebuilt. My outboard piston engages before the innboard, but won't retract as much as the inboard piston. Also, the inboard piston sits at a cocket angle ever so slightly. Are these telltale signs of a rebuild? I tried to bleed them but no air.

It sounds like the seals and pistons are worn or maybe a clogged transfer port in the caliper. Hayes pistons do not have separate return springs they have a square seal that acts as a seal and a retraction spring. Here is a picture of the caliper piston and seal http://www.balleracing.com/Hayes_Caliper_Piston.htm

Kind of what I thought, maybe one season in the Pacific Northwest is about all these calipers can handle considering the months of grime kicked up in the wet months. Thanks, I'll get to a rebuild then.
