| Shimano '03 Hydro howling help | JimC. Jan 12, 2004 10:56 AM | | yes I FAQ'd myself with the FAQ. I've faced the tabs, tightened it ALL down, and the front seems AOK, but the back is awful. Anyone else?
Next fix: I can get an Aztec replacement rotor at MEC for $21 CAD, to replace the Shimano one.
Interested in others' experience with these discs?

| Cheaper and quicker than buying new parts would be to... | Tscheezy Jan 12, 2004 1:52 PM | | swap the front and back bits. Move the front rotor and pads to the back and see what that does. You may even try running the rear rotor "backwards" (I know some rotors are directional, but on some, like Hope Minis, it does not seem to matter). May be worth a try.
I notice a difference in brake noise between the front and back of my bikes, and between the same equipment on different bikes. It is an elusive and confounding resonance thing. Once you find a combo which treats you well, you are set (for a while, anyway).

| bless you, another valid (cheap) workaround | JimC. Jan 12, 2004 2:11 PM | | I hadn't thought of. A newer version of "just wiggle the plug". I was getting closer to buying a torque wrench to tighten it all correctly instead of by feel. I attach a picture of the kind of "torque wrench" I was thinking of after one particularly loud ride. Jim ;P
....at least I don't have to move the rotors further away from eh pads like yo told that poor SOB with mushy levers, eheheheheheh. |
| Jim, I have Deore 555's, and what fixed the squeal | Mackie. Jan 13, 2004 7:37 AM | | for me was ditching those rotors.
The Aztecs are a good solve.
But try Tscheezys suggestion first.
Good luck. |

| Jim did you ever get your lever reach issue sorted? (NM) | Mackie. Jan 13, 2004 12:33 PM | | |
| Yep I did...it helps | JimC. Jan 13, 2004 2:38 PM | | if you can see what yer doing. In my old age, it's dang hard to see in there even though this was my 3rd set of discs, er, 4th, 5 if you count my wife's bike. I sorta knew what I was doing, but got it fixed inward as best I can. Because it's a low end lever, not too adjustable like my Hopes or Gustavs, but hey, the bike I got was a steal and I love the ride, the brakes are not that important, as I'm just trail riding it.
I think I'm gonna grab that Aztec for the rear. thanks again Mackie, see you over in the new forum, well, I hope. It's hard to see in there.
cheers, Jim |
| re: Shimano '03 Hydro howling help | Gravity Slave Jan 15, 2004 7:28 AM | | Try using a hardcore degreaser on your disc and caliper. A common mistake is when people are lubing up their drivetrain, the oil sometimes gets on the disc. If your pads are contaminated, they are garbage. Disc brake pads are thirsty for anything oil based. I would try to compare rear pads to the front. But is sounds like a contaminated pad situation. |
| Those brakes are good but those rotors suck... | Homebrew Jan 16, 2004 6:18 AM | | Skip the dorking around and go directly to the rotor replacement scenario. Save your time and sanity and just spend the extra couple of bucks. For what you paid for the bike, you are still coming out waaaaay ahead. |
