| Can you mate dual control lever to Hayes caliper? | Tyrone from Oz Jan 13, 2004 2:45 AM | | Currently I'm in the search for a new bike and I like the new giant VT1 with the hayes discs but i also want the new XTR dual control levers/shifters. Is there a way to make them work together and why don't they work together as is. |
| No, not possible. Shimano uses mineral oil and Hayes uses... | AndyH Jan 13, 2004 5:21 AM | | ...DOT fluid. The two are not compatible. Not to mention there may be differences in the master cylinder size between a Hayes brake lever and a Shimano brake lever which could effect braking power/feel. |

b NO
two company's hydraulic brake systems can be mated in any safe manner. Well, sure its probably physically possible with some level of tinkering and retrofitting, but to what end and what purpose? Two many factors: hose fitting compatiblity, master/slave piston size ratios, hydraulic media, etc. Then there's the inherent voiding of the warranty. IMO, I wouldn't ever combine or retrofit two different systems together. It's a brake system! What if it fails! I've already had a hydro brake fail on me once (which was not tinkered with, might I add) and couldn't live with the notion that my brake system would be at a higher risk of failing because I changed out some parts. Sorry, I didn't mean to bash the original poster in any way. Just thought I'd back up that first statement before someone jumps on me and says "well, actually you could....blah,blah,blah..". Possible? Yes. Safe? I wouldn't say so. IMO, this is the one area of bike you don't want to experiment with in such a fashion. All just my opinion.
