SRAM Corporation Signs Letter of Intent to Acquire Avid LLC

Chicago, IL – January 13, 2004

SRAM Corporation is pleased to announce the signing of a Letter of Intent to purchase Avid LLC. Avid is widely recognized as the technology and performance leader in braking systems, and this acquisition furthers SRAM's goal of providing a full component group to the bike industry.

The combination of SRAM and Avid creates a stronger company, and the only supplier in the bike industry to offer a broad range of Drivetrain, Suspension, and Brake Systems. SRAM's breadth in global operations will improve capacity, information flow, and service for the Avid product lines. The combination of Avid's and SRAM's proven product development will lead to exciting new product lines.

Over the last 15 years SRAM has grown to be the second largest component supplier in the industry. SRAM has a unique heritage of product innovation and customer service starting with twist shifters and extending through drivetrains. We have grown through our own efforts and the through the integration of three other great companies. These include:
Ø Sachs: The inventor of freewheels and internal gear hubs.
Ø RockShox: The inventor of mountain bike suspension.
Ø Avid: The inventor of adjustable brake levers and leader in disc brake systems.

SRAM and Avid are currently in the final phase of due diligence, with the closing expected to take place by Jan. 30th. Detailed integration plans with are being formulated with Avid, and will be communicated to the industry at the Taipei show in March.

Didn't see that one coming. Not sure I like the sound of it either. Hmm...

Weren't you just raving about SRAM and Avid independently in another forum?
Yup, but I like it when each focuses on their personal strength.Tscheezy

All-inclusive jack-of-all-trades mutt companies tend to make me nervous. They both offer my choice in respective components, but I would not want Sram to buy out Turner either, for instance. Just leery.

i see what you are saying, i think it'll be cool. there are lots of parent companies to lots of companies most people don't even know about or realize, i think that Sram is buying these companies and leaving everything as is to a point. i don't think their intentions are to take the individuality away from these companies. i think it's more to keep them alive and help them in whatever way they can.
Oh goody....."twist" braking! {nmm}Mike T.

I wuz wundering how Avid would weather the "integrated" storm…f'nætik (aka næstep)

...heading their way — that is to say, the direction Shimano is taking with the "flippity" levers and their nearly assured dominance on the mid-to-high end drivetrain market. Considering LX will probably sport "flippity" shifting in the next 12 months, Avid would have been all but locked out of the OEM business amongst the bikes that get any recognition.

So... who is next in SRAM's sites? Rohloff?
Be very glad it wasn't S**m**o.man w/ one hand

Then you'd see the price of everything BLOW-UP. IMHO.
Now wouldn't a SRAM/Avid shifter/brake combo be good???.....YES.
anyone remember this?GEEI'MGROSS
