How can I get more(+4.6inch) rear travel on my GT i-drive 5?RG
Sep 4, 2001 6:03 AM

Is there a way to get more than 4.6 inch of rearwheel travel on my GT I-drive 5.0 (2001 model)?
Most of the time I ride downhill/dualslalom and the 4.6inch is just not enough.
Tips and tricks are very welcome.

thx.
get a different shock >>>>>>>>>rich

You can get a shock that measures 6.75(171mm) i2i with a 1.75(44mm) inch stroke. That will fit on your bike and give you like 5.5 inches of travel, but they are kinda hard to find.I think stratos makes them and also if you can find a stock shock off a 2000 specialized "bighit" that also is the correct size.......goodluck
Follow Rich's advice...but bewareZonic Man

I put a risse shock on it, and if the shock is too stiff, you run the risk of blowing the frame up. If the shock is too weak, you have the same issue.

Gotta do trial an error....Acadian seems to have found the right blend on his bike. Luc?
I think it also has to do with the year of the bike...Acadian

My XCR is one of the first production runs ('99)...it was burly and I think the material used at that time was stronger than the year's after (cause they wanted to save weight). This weekend I just replaced my top shock mount bolt..and the thing was bent to hell, but the seat mast seemed to be fine, although I'm sure if I had been riding a I-Drive 2.0 or 3.0 it might of been a different story!
Yeah, I think they're now made from papier-mache...my name is Nobody...

...6.75" eye-to-eye, 1.75" stroke shock for 5.4" of travel. Totally changes the feel of the bike. Very worthwhile upgrade.

Buy a different bike. I'm nor trying to be an ass but with the upgrade you will get an extra inch! Is it really worth the money? Nowadays you can buy a decent frame for a good price, just save up. It sounds to me like your more into dh/freeridning anyway so why not take this opportunity to upgrade. D
You have to ride an I-Drive to understand ;o)Acadian

Let me explainRG

I can't use a real DH bike, like a Balfa BB7 or Santa Cruz Bullit, because I need to peddel, it's too far to walk to the top and there are no elevators on the hills, so I have to Ride uphill....
....and that's why I need the I-drive (tested a lot off other bikes, none of them came close with pedelling-efficiency.)
An other problem is that I can't afford a +1800$ bike.
