| Plattekill DH on a hardtail -- possible? | Colin S. Sep 4, 2001 8:39 AM | | Hi. I'll hopefully be going to the Collegiate Nats. at Plattekill at the end of Oct., and while I prolly won't qualify to race, I do plan on riding as much as possible. Thing is, Living in FL, I don't have a DH bike. I do have a PX slalom bike and plan on riding that. I just don't want to kill myself. Any thoughts? I'll prolly run some big tires and have at it.

| What condition are the KHS DH rental bikes at the lodge? | Str8Dwn Sep 4, 2001 11:28 AM | | I might rent one if they've been maintained. Tell me your thoughts? |
| hey al3x... | blong Sep 4, 2001 12:15 PM | | i race collegiate A's and do pretty well, but i've got a px too. is the course too big (drops/jumps) for a hardtail? do they have a different course for b/c's?

| *shrug* | a13x Sep 4, 2001 12:37 PM | | you CAN ride pkill on a hardtail. i don't think you can RACE the expert courses on a hardtail. ppl can say what they want but 9 times out of 10 the courses are too hard (expert ones) to ride on a hardtail at anything resembling a race speed.
as far as the KHS's... it's like 50 bucks or something. Abe (guy who posts here from cali) rented one a while ago. didn't seem to be having too much luck with it. |
| ya, you can ride just fine BUT | $eth Sep 4, 2001 2:03 PM | | depends on whether or not you care about being "competative" in the race..... as long as you keep your eyes open you should make it down in one piece fine |
| you won't be competitive, but should still have fun | sirbikealot Sep 4, 2001 7:14 PM | | you'd better have some skills
good luck |
| National Champ for BMX, and #5 in the World | Str8Dwn Sep 4, 2001 7:48 PM | | At 15 I was both of those. Yeah, that was a few years ago. I still have some moves. Granted, DH for me will be something different. Can't wait! |
| National Champ for BMX, and #5 in the World | Flat Sep 5, 2001 3:24 AM | | You'll have absolutely no problem.. Big tires will be a big plus though.. See you there, I'll be the fat dwarf on the Karpiel with the Evil Bikes guide and jersey on. Jon! |
| you can....... | heff® Sep 4, 2001 10:04 AM | | .....ride whatever you want. I've only briefly owned a FS bike, and that an XC model. I've always done my hardcore DH riding on a hardtail, it's just more comfortable (?!?!?!) for me. Whether your back and legs can handle it is another story.
Run as big a tire as you can, at as low a pressure as you can. I would suggest taking an old tube, slicing it along the inside, and wrapping it around your good tube. This'll give you some pinch flat resistance, and allow you to run lower pressure than usual. Use duct tape or electrical tape to hold it in place. Cheap tire liner, 'eh?
Other than that, the usual applies. Seat low, bars high, scream like a monkey with a hemmorhoid. You'll do fine.

| definately | asb Sep 4, 2001 10:09 AM | | friend of mine rode with me last week- on a redline ds bike with a 34 chainring in the front, a manitou x-vert dc and avid mech brakes. kid made it down everything I did on my straight 6. he's nuts, and on anything fast or rough he had to slow down, but in the woods and the steeps he was right behind me. he even did the big drop on the pro dh course from the last race.
you'll do fine, just try to keep off the seat as much as possible and run low pressure. He had cheapo tires- a tioga psycho and a cyclepro motivator...so you'll do fine with something better.

| Saw Atom there riding on a Tankass. | JoeCool Sep 4, 2001 10:13 AM | | nm |
| yep... | Atom Sep 4, 2001 2:12 PM | | Plattekill on a HT is ALOT of fun. That day though it was kinda rough. It was rainy, and the head angle on my 'ass was kinda steep to make some of those turns in the slick conditions.
Everything can be done at plattekill on a HT. Its a little rough on the knees but any sorta DHing on a HT is.
Try and get as big of a rear tire as you can, and then run like 15-18 psi. |
