Army / Yeti / Straight 8 / Whatpetri

I've almost broken my Stab frame and will hopefully get a good pile'o'cash from the insurance company for that.

Now I have only one problem; which frame to get? I've considered the Armageddon, Yeti Lawwill DH9, Schwinn Straight8 and Brooklyn TMX. The use would be downhill & freeride with some urban thrown in for good measure. I'm quite lightweight, around 180lbs I believe.

Can the back end of the Yeti handle drops? Any experiences and / or problems with any of the above?

Thanks,

2 very different ends of the DH spectrum?kpb

The Army and Brooklyn are Longggg Travel HD bikes that are built for Major drops and DH riding that has boulders dropped in the middle of the trail. The Schwinn and Yeti are pure DH race bikes to the best of my knowledge, very long wheelbase on these bikes and I do not believe they would be good Freeride bikes at all.

How about something a little more in the middle? Karpiel Disco, Turner DHR or Foes DHS Tube. I'd avoid the monocoque frames such as the Intense or more expensive Foes if you're doing Free Riding as well. They may be as strong as welded aluminum tubes but they're loud and the sounds they do make always sound to me like somethings breaking, just a personal opinion.

I have a Str-8
My bud has a DH-9...

In my opinion, it all depends on how you ride.
Are you going to have to climb to the top of your favorite DH run?
Get a Str-8 or DH-9.
Are you going to huck your bike off of loading docks onto concrete?
Get a Karpiel.

Are your DH trails full of small-medium rocks, pedaling, and moderate (6ft) drops? Get the str-8 or DH-9

Do you care about being smooth and fast? Str-8 dh-9
Do you jsut care about making it down alive b/c the trail is way above your ability? Karpiel

The Karpiel doesn't pedal too well. It also feels liek it goes through it's travel too quick, or ramps up too quick.

The str-8 and DH-9 are SWEET bikes capable of almost any trails you can throw at them. They pedal well, take most big hits...
I jsut wouldn't needlessly abuse them with big drops to flat concrete.
Get a Krapiel for that, these are RACE bikes.

Thanks for the info!

I decided on the Str-8, mainly because it was the only one available without waiting a couple of months.

Also, the moderate drop - 6ft - is about as big as they come around here, so I'm hoping the back end sill hold up. Additionally I don't like flat landings to concrete, so that propably won't be a problem.

Pedalling is definitely an issue as the land is flat as a pancake mostly, and the Str-8 has a floating disc mount and a 20mm thru-axle hub, which I do like.

Now if I only got the insurance decision soon enough so that the only unsold frame in this country won't be sold by that time...
