| Anyone opened a Hayes MC? | Dougal Oct 4, 2001 1:30 AM | | Has anyone here opened a Hayes master cylinder?
I'm curious as to the internals and the sealed for life aspect. I've also got a squeak in one of mine, I'd like to squirt some silicone spray in through the rubber boot but don't want to risk any damage.

| I have! | Flat Oct 4, 2001 3:05 AM | | There is a nylon plunger, with 2 lip seals on it.. The nylon expands over time, and causes rubbing.. I took mine out, turned the nylon down a bit, but in the process cut a seal.. I found new seals, but they were impossible to put on without damaging them.. They must put them on in extreme heat or something.
I think it's pretty safe to assume that getting some silicone under the boot will help, and won't hurt anything.. As that piston runs on the inside of an alumium cylinder.. When I talked to Hayes, they said they were going to make available all small parts to dealers.. But I haven't followed up on that to see if you can simply get a new piston with seals installed, instead of a whole new master cylinder.
Call up your local hayes distributor, and see if they can get you just a piston.. It'll cure your problem, and make your brakes feel like brand new.

| Hmm, so I guess what happened to one of mine... | KonaDude Oct 4, 2001 6:48 AM | | ...was that the nylon expanded so much the piston got stuck. My rear brake lever did that when I had Hayes. Wouldn't return after that. Got a new lever on warranty, but I've never had such troubles with my Avids, and yes they do make good DH brakes if you hook 'em up with an 8" rotor. 'course just the general thought of cable brakes on a DH bike is kinda odd. Hydros on my DH bike, but cables on the FR hardtail.
