best way to lace a rear hub?plshelp

now that my rear wheel is destroyed i am purchasing a mavic xy rim to replace the brutalized araya. my question is what is the strongest, or best is a better term,way to lace the new wheel up?3 cross, 4 cross that funny twisted looking job? i dunno. it is a 24" rim on a 36hole nexus hub so it is also dishless. thanks all who can help

3-cross is pretty much the strongest. Check out 'The Bicycle Wheel' at Amazon or another book store, more on wheel building and the science behind it than you'll ever want to know.

But ya, stick with a 3 cross.

3x is not the strongest by any means,...you want to 4x that sucker!! 4x on a 36 hole set-up is natural,...i have my Hayes/Hugi on a 24" Rhyno lite XL laced 4x and it is super strong. You will be simply wasting your money if you go 3x!! Also if you need custom spokes (which you will) call up Dans Comp(www.danscomp.com) and tell them what hub, what rim, what spoke(they have everything) and what lace you want and they will cut the spokes,...mine cost $38 shipped to my door for 14g stainless in all black,...for both wheels! If you are also unsure,...they will tell you if it is not feasable to 4x your wheel so you can trust their advice!

That is what i was told when purchasing my new wheelest.They said 4x would be very flexy for disc brakes.
4x is slightly better than 3x but doesn't always fit. nmDougal

Got any source to back that up?

4 cross is an annoying pattern to change spokes with and isn't any stronger.

I've got Sheldon Brown and Jobst Brandt on my side. you?

Depends in which direction you want it to be strong. The closer the spokes are laced to tangent to the hub flage (which is what happens when you increase the # of spoke crossings) the better they will resist radial forces (i.e. braking forces/spoke wind, and acceleration). However, this results in longer spokes, leaving the flange a slightly lower angle, which decreases lateral strength (which is why radial spoking is actually the stiffest and strongest pattern for non-drive, non-disc wheels, unless your hubs have thin flanges).

The only real application for 4X lacing is a 26" wheel with 8" rotors that will be used at very high speeds, because that combo exerts the most radial force on the hub and spokes, and at high speeds the wheel experiences very few strong lateral forces (unless you really screwed up, in which case your spoke lacing is the last of your worries).

And if you do a lot of low speed, trials-style stuff (rear wheel drops, etc) you might even want to consider 2X lacing as you'll be less likely to taco on a big drop.

But with a 24" wheel, lateral strength is not that much of an issue (so 2X would be silly), and even with 8" rotors the leverage on the spokes and hub is reduced (so 4X would detract from lateral strength, and probably force put your spoke nipples at odd angles to your rim), so 3X is the perfect compromise. If you build it well, and keep it highly tensioned, you'll break before your wheel will.

you can't get notably stronger then 3x on a 24" 36h wheel.

I've heard of 5 cross lacing on a custom Sun Double Wide Rim, but that doesn't even matter
