26" FR rim?(15 posts)

26" FR rim?CraigH

Thinking Mavic 321 at this point. Any comments or suggestions?

Would be going on a Bullit with 6" Boxxer. Hubs would be 20mm Hayes front & Hugi/Magura Gustav rear.

Thanks!
Great choice... sorta..Erci

It's what I'm running on my Joker. While the rims are VERY tough, they're also quite heavy. Heavier than I'd like them to be for XC. If you want to run really fat tires, 321 is a great choice (the wider the rim the better to minimize tire roll), but if you'll be using these for XC I'd go with 521's. You'll save 1/2 pound on the wheelset. They're just as tough too. Got 521's on my HT and I love how "light" they feel when I want to accelerate fast.

I have XC FS with a RhynoLite/Sachs hubs wheelset.

For tires on the Bullit, right now I'm running a 2.7 Intense on the front, 2.5 Maxxis Highroller on the back.

Why not stick with a Rhyno Lite then? Very strong wheel, wide enough for the big tires, extremely cheap to replace for when you taco it off your botched 10'er.

The 321 is a great rim, but fairly expensive as well, the Rhyno Lite is a good classic choice, Double Wide is another.

That said, I run a Mavic 519F on the front of my Bullit because that's the burliest rim the LBS had in stock at the time and it's served me well, even with a 2.6" gazzi.

and folded it at the bottom of a rock face with a worse transition than this one. (Sorry no pic of that one.)

I don't seem to be that hard on parts but if I'm building up a good rim, I'd rather not have to worry about folding them. I was able to kick it straight enough to ride out, but that night I spent it taking the rim apart and rebuilding it so that I could ride Whistler the next day. (Didn't have a spare 20mm disk wheel.)

I also need to build up a set of XC disk wheels and was thinking about the 519.

Ya, dunno, you sure it was all tight?

I ride super steep tranny's all the time and have never folded a wheel. A different rim is going to make very little difference compared to the build when it comes to it folding over completely.

If it already had a lot of dings and couldn't be true without it being loose, then ya, it makes sense.

But if you're consistently wrecking them, by all means go with a 321 or double wide.
It felt tight but as it was on a 20mm hub....CraigH

I couldn't put it on my truing stand to check accurately.

It didn't fold over completely, but enough that the tire was bouncing off the fork leg. A few kicks in the right spot got it close enough that it would spin.

It was pretty close to straight before this.

I've never wrecked a wheel before that one, well that isn't totally true, I bent a rim on a XC FS that was weak due to brake wear.
consider vuelta's too. colors, inexpensive, TOUGH©2001

and has been happy with them.

I know another guy who had the FR on his Kona HT and didn't like them. He is pretty hard on parts though.
mine have stayed straight and true for a year now©2001

WTB Laserdisc DH, which are lighter than the 321's, and very strong. I checked the Sun site yesterday and Ryno lites are GONE FROM THE SITE! Nothing but disc rims there now.
The Rhyno Lites are still listed....CraigH

I have the Bullit with 321's, DT Onyx (20 mm TA Front), and Stratos S5..... works great.

BTW, last weekend I blew the rear tire right before a 4 foot drop and landed on the wheel, didn't even chip the 321 (and I'm 200 lbs). Great wheels !

The Mavic 321 is a great rim. It's super hard which makes it more difficult to build up and true, but once you have it it'll stay that way for a long time. I've run and still do run the Sun products and have had great luck with them as well. There soft though and come out of true a bit more easily than the Mavics. This make them really easy to true and build up. Bottom line... either rim will workout great, however the quality of the Mavics are just a bit more refined and get my vote. I hope this helps.

I had a ryhno lite set, front and rear, and have had no problems at all with front - still as good as new - never been trued after 5 months of urban riding. My rear though, has been reaplaced.. not too strong. Cheap though, but I have decided to go for a laterally stiffer rim - D521.. i'm impressed with it.

If you have a loose spoke or two on a ryhno, you'll know - it'll be wonky. The D521 will take it. Might be worth it for the long run to go for a D521 or a 321 - unless you smush any kind of rim. ;)
