Bike Porn..My New Dorado....pezzo33
Oct 4, 2001 2:11 PM
Here it is, my new Dorado, all ready for this weekends P-Kill race. So far initial impressions are great, but it has not seen big use yet. It is supersmooth out of the box with NO stiction at all. Will post more after the race this weekend.

and as a couple small note on it for anyone looking at buying one. The integrated stem IS included, as are disc brake adapters for both hayes and Shimano 8" (two seperate).

In comparision to my old Boxxer, the front end height is about four inches lower now, and the fork was 3/4 of a pound lighter on a digital scale.

Watch more more pictures tonight from Interbike, including the Giant, Chausson's Gemeni, King 20mm hub, and more.

enjoy!

PS, and on a side note too, Easton Has some new DH carbon bars. And for all of you that worry about the strength of Carbon, after something like 50,000 cycles (the equivelent to 5 years use every day for four-six hours), the handlbar broke the machine...not bad huh, and only 220 grams.

4"'s lower than your boxxer? Damn, that's gotta mess with your geometry in a serious way.. That was a 7" boxxer? Almost sounds like it would be shorter than a single crown Z1.

What's the total weight? 6 pounds? Carbon uppers right? Stiffness?

Let us know how it goes!

actually, after measuring ad not guessing, it is 2.75 inches lower...oh well..

so far it is stiff, between the hex axle and the integrated stem clap (and my new front wheel too I am sure), I cannot feel it flexing in the limited riding I have done. Basically, I went hard into turns in berms, and it tracked straight trhough, where as with my boxxer I could feel the wheel wave and flex..

height is only a little higher than my tazer with a 5" black on it, so it is a better switch betweent he two bikes without much difference in ther iding position..

weighs in at like 6 1/2 pounds with the brake adapter, stem and top clamp..

I thought the boxxers were about 6.5lb and the Doroda claimed at 7lb. What's the actual weight of each?

Try and break it, tell us if you do.

well the one at my bike shop is!
Are you sure...Manitou told me 8 lbs. with the stem...go-ride.com
Oct 5, 2001 5:02 PM
and the one at the show felt even heavier than that. In all honesty I was hoping that the fork would have impressed me more. I am still ordering a few, but it was not nearly as smooth as a Monster and IMO not much lighter, plus obviously much more flexy.

I will have to reserve judgement untill after I have tested one on a shop bike, but at this momment I think it is just average. Plus the ones at the Dirt Demo were leaking oil badly. I don't know if this was just oil lubricating the legs or if the damping cartridge had blown.

Again, I am still hoping that the fork will prove to be a winner, but so far it is not living up to the initial hype.

The new Avalanche fork on the other hand has been ablsolutely sweet. It has that super sweet Monster T plushness, yet the damping keeps the fork from diving to the bottom of its travel under hard braking. Of course there is a steep price to pay, but once you have seen the guts of this fork you realize you are getting your moneys worth. Its parts are straight out of a works MX fork that has been miniturized. Very impressive. Plus it weighs in about 9 lbs. which is only 1 lbs. heavier than the Dorado at the show.

go-ride.com
according to my digital scale, yes...show claimed 7 pounds..pezzo33
Oct 5, 2001 7:23 PM
the one manitou had at the show was a claimed 7 pounds, not eight, and mine weighed 6.25 after being cut on a digital scale..I was impressed.

so far I can not give any long term facts about it, but it is good, where I could flex flex my boxxer pushing it trhough berms and corners, I do not feel that in this. I do not have any super extended time ont he shiver so I can not comment onthat, but it feels al ot lighter on the front end then the shiver I have ridden.

as for not being plush, Iguess yu may have a different opinion or have ridden a more broken in or beaten fork. mine felt better out of the box then my facotry tuned boxxer. absolutely NO stiction at the beginning of the travel, and I could not bottom it out no matter what I did, even jumping up and down on it..

the sitffness is a combo of the hex axle, the integrated stem/clamp, and my new wheel, but it is not all the wheel, Iw oudl attirbute it to the fork more..

I am racing it this weekend, and we will see. Scott, email me if you got an questions of concerns. If need be, I can take it of the bike and take a picture of it on a dig scale fo you if you want.. but so far, I have been impressed.

as for the avalanche, yeah, it is great, but the cost is up there, and the dorado is on the much lower side for Pro level Dh forks, less at suggested retail than the boxxer and shiver I believe (or the same).

any more questions, let me know, and I will post more info on the fork monday...

my 2001 Boxxer weighed in at just under7 pounds, including the disc brake adapter, upper crown, and stem (easton 50mm magnesium, about 160 grams)
The dorado with disc brake adapter, integrated stem/clamp weighed in at just under 6 1/4 pounds after cutting to length.

I as surprised it was as light as it was...and feels even lighter on the bike..
wow, that's light.........bcd

gram scale or other?
wow, that's light.........pezzo33

digital gram scale, I was much surprised (but happy) when I put it on there. And The scale is definitely accurate.

PS, did you see the new Easton DH carbon bar? 220 grams, and it broke their testing machine it is so strong. They could not damage it! Thought oyu might be interested in that...

Nice bike. I've heard that there are some flexing issues with the Dorados. Is this true? Super Sweet setup by the way!

so far from what I can see and the limited riding it has seen, flex is not an issue, less the the Xvert carbon I had, and seemingly less then the Boxxer. It seems as if the Hex axle is a lot more than hype, and does its job. I pushed the bike hard through a corner, and (matched with my new front wheel), it did not wave at all, something I could do with the boxxer..the superstiff and strong integrated stem clamp helps too I am sure.

the blew out at the dirt demo spilling oil all over the lower portion of the fork(and near the disc!).

4 inches shorter than the Boxxer ?I sn't that a huge amount ?Wow I have one on order and that seems like too big of a difference.
re: Bike Porn..My New Dorado....pezzo33
Oct 4, 2001 7:53 PM
actually, 4" was a little bit of an exageration based on a guess. actual difference is about 2.75", and to tell you the truth, I could not be happier. I would suggest the fork, it is easier to stear now, and has more standover near the headtube

how about a second place prize?

and I have a question regarding a prototype Michelin tire from either this year or last year. Looks the same as the Hot S except has a slightly darker red compound. Prototype Comp24 or something else?
although...pezzo33
Oct 4, 2001 9:29 PM
although I cannot tell exactly from that picture what teh tire is, it is most likely the new 2.5" Hot S. Yup, you heard that right, the size and tread of the COMP 24 DH, but with the harder and tackier rubber (and longer lasting) of the Hot S with a kevlar beed, lighter sidewall, and 800 gram weight. Look for it in stores in December..
hope this helps

PezZo, Nice Fork! I want one but the only thing stopping me is the price(here in Aus they are quite pricy). There is a few things i am unsure of -

Cost: How much did it cost you personally (in $US) ?

Front end: could you do us a favor and measure the distance from youre front axel to the bottom of you're headset?? please.

Handlebar: What handlebar are you running?? is it a carbon monkeybar?? Isn't that an XC bar?? (I need a new bar to fit(i have oversize azonics))

Thankyou in advance.
