| Hey you suspension geeks... | [s]B Oct 4, 2001 2:37 PM | | When people talk about a shock being a stuctural part of the frame, or somthing like that, what does that mean? I gather that it's not a good thing and makes shocks break, but how?

| it means... | zedro Oct 4, 2001 3:12 PM | | the shock bears loads that would normally be handled by frame members. Non-structural shocks take only compressive loads (ie: along the shaft). The frame itself stays 'coherent' without the shock, despite the suspension being able to move freely (but in a constrained path). A structural shock acts as a type of suspension link; removing it would cause the suspension linkage to 'fall apart'.
Turners Maverick and MacStruts fall into this catagory, and both are not DH bikes (and i dont believe one exists).
Front forks would also technically fall into this catagory, and linkage forks wouldnt. |
