Suck at dirt jumping, any tips?(5 posts)

Suck at dirt jumping, any tips?squirrel

I tried some doubles at a local trail today and I just don't seem
to be getting it.

I keep casing the top of the landing ramp. I was surprised to see
how hard it is to get much air even though the ramp is like nearly 60deg steep.

Am i supposed to pull up or something to get more air?

go really fast, pull up slighly and push down SLIGHTLY. try to land both wheels at the same time. as you get better you're technique will get better and you'll need less speed. basically just go really fast. hope i made sense.

Hey, I just started dirt jumping a few months ago. I'll bet any money you just have to go faster. If you have enough speed you really don't have to "jump" off the ramp. The ramp will throw you. You also might be sucking the jump up too much. Try to stay a little stiffer so you keep all that momentum. But seriously, I was catching the top of the landing a lot until I just started going faster. Then it's so much easier. Ride on!

I beg to differ about the "just go faster".
SUre sometime you need more speed, but it is not the only answer.

Basically let the front lift as you go over the lip extend the legs then pick up the back of the bike by pulling with the back of your legs (like a bunny hop) then drop the nose of the bike when you have cleared the back of the double. You can adjust the bike alot in the air, watching someone good do a jump for the first time you'll see what I mean.

This assumes that you can bunny hop with flat pedals, if not then sure just go faster.

Go jumping with the kids from the local BMX track get feedback on your technique from them. I learnt from a kid 10 years younger than me.

I have a Slayer and it is alot harder to jump than my Azonic DS1. My suggestion is get a hardtail to jump with and use the Slayer for the drops and xc riding
