At least Craftworks is original and renamed the Pacific DHR205 the Craftworks DHR208. Also, the previous post was the Craftworks FRM125 and the Pacific FR125. |

| Clearing up the confusion...straight from Craftworks Cycles | Craftworks Cycles Oct 7, 2001 8:38 PM | | I've just posted this message to a similar discussion.
But to help the confusion and to let you know that Pacific acutally have 'borrowed' our frame name DHR205/208. You'll notice that their top tube sticker is an old Craftworks one from our DHR205 model - they simply ran out of our down tube stickers for this picture, which was the first prototype DHR208 they made for us. It is the same deal with our FRM125 (that we named)- the gray frame is our first prototype before we had our stickers (decals) made (which are also made in Taiwan).
You can image our frustration when our manufacturer copies our model names....
Yes, our frames are manufactured in Taiwan by Pacific Cycles, the same way Mongoose are made by Taiwan Hoidaka and Specialized, Trek and Gary Fisher are made by Giant. The way these Taiwan manufacturing companies work are that they usually have their own brands that they also sell as well as making specific frames that are for their customers (like the above).
Craftworks has had a 6 year relationship with Pacific Cycles. I work very closely with George Lin (President and Owner) and the engineering guys at Pacific. Unfortunately a lot of the designs and enhancements that I make to our product (Craftworks) the guys at Pacific also use these with other brands that they make such as the brands you have listed - it is something I cannot control. But if you really do look carefully at the Craftworks DHR208 you'll see there is a large difference between our frames and the frames you've mentioned. Pacific Cycles cannot sell the Craftworks frames design (FRM125 & DHR208) to any other brands, but they modify from the original design and sell those. I don't think people understand just how much work has been put into the design and refinements - I am in Taiwan at least 4 -5 times a year working with the engineers and overseeing every production run of our frames. It is incorrect and unfair to suggest we have merely picked these frames from a catalogue (like most companies do).
I'm more than happy to detail all the specific features that differentiate the Craftworks 208 frame from those that Pacific Cycles sell to other brands. Craftworks is the only bicycle company that works with Pacific Cycles on downhill products and because of our good relationship with them, we do not mind if they use the intellectual property we have to help improve their other selling products. As you'd understand Nike does not have a single shoe factory, but works with their manufacturer to make the best possible shoes. This manufacturer obviously cannot sell Nike shoes to other brand shoe companies, but sells very similar shoes to other companies and uses it's improvements in manufacturing - welcome to the global modern world!
Hope this has cleared it all up....and I understand your concern.
Thank you

Hi Alex,
This is the frame that I designed and the image is from our manufacturer in
Taiwan - showing off their manufacturing skills. Pacific Cycles make a
large range of different brand bikes just like Giant manufacture
Specialized, Gary Fisher and Trek, and Merida make GT etc.
Pacific have been our manufacturer for over 5 years now, and we have a very
close relationship with them. I am at the factory in Taiwan around 3 - 4
times a year overseeing our manufacturing runs. The DHR208 that you see
pictured was one of the sample runs (you'll notice they put an old 205mm
decal on it), and they didn't have any of our new down tube decals.
Can you confirm where you got this picture from ....I'm guessing it was the
Pacific Cycles web site?
Hope this clears things up for you,
Thanks
Robert

And this is a resonse from VicMtb (a local aussie bikeshop - www.vicmtb.com.au):
Alex,
Pacific Cycles is a Taiwanese company owned by a brilliant but crazy
engineer by the name of George Lim. He's famous in the bicycle industry as
the first guy to make 'rigid' framed BMX bikes, way back in the
mid-seventies, at a time when Taiwan only produced gimmicky ' suspension'
BMXers like the Yamaha Moto-bike.
Always one to innovate, George was at the forefront of the suspension
revolution in MTB's. I first spoke to him in 1975 when I helped Gary
Fisher cobble together the first mountain bike. Those were the days.
I then did some consulting work with George in 1990 in relation to front
forks and a suspension frame he eventually sold to a company in Australia
(as well as overseas). With the guidance I was able to provide, Pacific
Cycles now produces bikes for companies all over the world, including some
of the biggest names in the business.
The last I heard of George Lim he was working on some kind of 'Astral
Travel' machine that he claims will enable him to travel backwards and
forwards in time!!!
If you need any more information or would actually like to purchase
something, please call on 03 9817 2917. We offer the lowest prices on
Craftworks bikes.
