| Need advice on a few upgrades | Jeff G. Nov 4, 2001 10:01 PM | | I've got the itch to spend money on my bike again, and I was thinking of these upgrades for my Bullit....
Fork: 02 Super T
Cranks: Race Face Northshores
Tires: High Rollers
Seat: Whatever Titec has for DH
Maybe upgrade rear shock to 7"'s
Any suggestions would be cool! |
| Advice: The best possible upgrade anyone can make is TIRES! | sirbikealot Nov 4, 2001 10:13 PM | | by getting well performing tires for your application you will be able to improve your riding better than if you got new brakes of cranks
go tires first and yes high rollers are a good place to start, maybe michelins if you race |
| I'm big on have a good fork... | GspotRider Nov 4, 2001 11:07 PM | | what do you have on their right now? If you have a single crown 5", I would definately go for the new super T!
Cranks...I would only replace if mine were broken, bent, too flexy...
Tires...What are you using now? HR are nice. I would suggest a 2.7" Mobster in front
Seat...Would only replace if broken, giving me numbnuts.... |
| I'm going to replace them all | Jeff G. Nov 5, 2001 7:57 AM | | I guess I didn't make myself clear enough on the first post. I'm not just going to do one or the other, I'm going to replace all the stuff I mentioned. Right now I have a 2000 Mr.T, Turbine LP's (bent), and Panaracer 2.3 front and back. Oh, and some cheap azz seat that kills my boys. |
| Front go w/Mobster | KaiMana Nov 5, 2001 10:17 AM | | I just put a 2.5 60 on my front and the thing rocks. |
| Parts on my Bullit... | CraigH Nov 5, 2001 12:18 PM | | 6" Boxxer, Truvativ Hussefelt cranks with RF XS Isis BB, 2.7" Intense 60 front, 2.5" 60 Maxxis HighRoller back, WTB SST-something (cheap one)
The only thing I'd change is to go to the 7" Boxxer if you are changing the rear shock to the new 7", and maybe a softer front tire such as the 2.7 Maxxis Mobster 50.
I'm really liking the 8" rotor on the back as it seems to modulate better than the 6", but that is an expensive change if you have to buy a new swingarm. |
| Parts on my Bullit... | Jeff G. Nov 5, 2001 1:45 PM | | How do you like those cranks, and how do they compare to the North Shores? I thought about changing to the Isis BB, but I'll wait until I trash my taper lock first. From what the others have said in the past the boxxer is more of a race fork, and do mostly hard FR. I've never raced in my life and I probably never will so that's why I was looking at the 02 Super T. I've never owned anything but Marz. and they've never given me a trouble. What's the biggest tire I can throw on the rear..2.7? Seriously....is the 8" rotor worth replacing the swing arm? Thanks again Craig! |
| RF NS are way more $$$$$.... | CraigH Nov 5, 2001 2:42 PM | | The Truvativ are about 1/2 the price of the RF NS. I compared them side by side and there is actually more material on the Truvativ. I can't check which alloy they are made from. The Truvativ DH crank seems to be working well for lots of NS riders. A lot of the local builders spec them on their NS series bikes. (Rocky Mountain, Kona, Brodie & Norco.)
I had to buy a new set of cranks as I cracked a set of Sugino on my XC FS. I moved the square drive RF Turbine set I had on my Bullit over and bought a new tougher set for the Bullit. (Also bought a RF XS Isis BB).
I've only had 3 rides on the bike in its new configuration but I'm not expecting any problems with the cranks as lots of people around here are using them sucessfully.
One of the guys I ride with ocassionally rides a Turner DHR and has problems with cranks (presently complaining about his Profiles) and asked Dave Turner what his recommendations were. He said the Truvativ DH and change them when you have problems. They are fairly inexpensive.
I see a lot more Boxxers than SuperTs on the NS mtns, and this is Marzocchi country. I've never used a Marzocchi double crown so no experience with them. My brother has 2001 Jr.T (6") on his Bullit and hasn't had any problems.
The guys that huck big go with Monster Ts. I don't know of anyone with one on their Bullit, but have seen them in the videos.
Biggest tire on the 2001 is apparently 2.6" Gaz. but your rim needs to be perfect. Not sure if the 2002 is the same or not.
The 8" rear rotor is about a $300 upgrade if you have to buy a swingarm. It is better, but probably not worth that much.
I hope this helps! |
| $hitload of info..thanks! | Jeff G. Nov 5, 2001 4:00 PM | | That was tons of helpful info. I'll take a look at those Truvativ cranks before I buy anything. Sometimes I wish I didn't have so many options when it comes to picking a fork! I've had nothing but Marz. so why dick it up now. I heard the 2002 allows a bigger rear tire but don't quote me on that one. I'll have to do some more research on that one. Thanks again for the tips. Later |
| You're welcome! | CraigH Nov 5, 2001 4:17 PM | | One of the guys I ride with has the 2001 SuperT on his Stinky. He is hard on parts, as he has broken almost everything that came stock on his Stinky. He posts over in Passion under the handle Islander. I don't think he has had any problems with his.

You'll probably be fine with either. One other good thing is that you can probably use your current front wheel. |
