I'm having problems with my new Bullit's chain. Whenever the bike goes down hard it gets stuck between the BB and the smallest chainring. This is no ordinary stuck either, I mean STUCK!! The bolts holding the small ring in place catch the chain and then I have to fiddle with it for 10 mins. What should I do?

Also, I just put new Motoraptor DH tires on it and the chain slaps the tire a lot now...should I be looking at the MRP longrange or what?

Did you set your chain length to be just enough at full compression?
Have you adjusted your front derailler so it almost touches the chain when it is in granny & 1st?
How old/mangled is your rear derailler?

I used to have problems with mine when I had a mangled rear with a weak spring. New rear derailler fixed the problem. (2 rings & bash guard) The chain slapping the tire makes me think you have to much chain or a weak rear derailler.

BTW, when you are riding hard, are you in the middle ring and largest rear cogs? This keeps the most tension on your chain preventing dropped chains.

3 rings...
No, I haven't set the chain length at all...How would I go about that?
Derailler is adjusted...
New XT r. Derailer, so I doubt that is the prob...

Maybe too much chain?

To set your chain length, pull the spring off your shock.
Reinstall shock. Bottom the travel right out.

Wrap the chain around the big rings front and back, with out going through your rear derailler.

Find the minimum length of chain you could use and add 2 complete sets of links. 1 as insurance in case you twist a link, you can still ride out, and the other to give you enough length when you compress your bump stop on the shock.

Reinstall the spring on the shock.

That should do it.

BUT, I don't know anyone running 3 rings on a Bullit so I'm not sure if this is sufficent. All the above info works great with 2 rings & bash guard. Do you need the 3rd ring? More ground clearance and the ability to slide over rocks and logs is a good thing! The pic below is why ground clearance is good, you wouldn't want to hang up on a chain ring before riding down this face.

BTW, I just use a cheap Deore rear derailler as they half the cost of a XT and they shift fine and tear off equally well. They might actually be a bit stronger as they have more metal in a few places to make them heavier in the catalog listings.

It may be that you're running too short of a spindle, which would place the cranks too close to the pivot. I had similar problems with my (since-sold) Stinky frame -- every time the chain would derail, it would wedge itself down past the bolts. Switching to a DH crank with no granny ring or associated bolts solved that problem, but I wouldn't recommend switching cranks. To get back to the point, try a longer BB spindle, or if your BB allows for it (or you have shims), try shifting your spindle to the right.

Yeah, a long range would be a great idea, as it will almost completely stop the chain slap. I've just bought mine, for 60$USD. Got a great deal on these! See ya,
