longer stroke avalnche on bullit?(16 posts)

longer stroke avalnche on bullit?RastaMan
Nov 6, 2001 9:06 AM
I was wondering if i could put a longer stroke avalanche shock on my bullit to increase the travel(like a 2.5 or 2.75). Would I need a new mount for the shock?

Thanks
if ya find out let me know...BostonBullit

I tried to get the stroke/e-to-e length info out of SC last week, making the mistake of mentioning Avalanche...here's what I got back:

i --All our rear shocks are made specifically for the bikes they are spec'd on. The rear shocks we have made for the Bullit (and all our other models for that matter), are specific to the Bullit. The manufacturer modifies the damping and internals for the specific leverage ratio, of each frame design, and the stroke/length is specifically designed for the total allowable rear wheel travel of the frame.
i We do not recommend the use of any non-stock rear shocks on any Santa Cruz frame. Doing so could cause damage to the frame and/or rider.
i Any damage that may occur due to the use of a non-stock rear shock, would not be covered by the SC Manufacturers Defect warranty.

i The current stock/authorized rear shocks available for the Bullit are:
i *Fox Vanilla and Float models.
i *Progressive Suspension 5th Element (Available in January 2002)

Scott was nice enough in the reply, and quick too, but it appears that SC isn't too keen on having other brands of shock strapped to their frames. I know there is a new shuttle involved in the 7" upgrade 'kit', so if you could get your hands on one of those and the requisite measurements then you could probably contatct Avalanche and have something done up. My LBS told me they should have an 02 Bullit in the shop in another 2 weeks, most likely with the fox rear. if someone explains how I should measure the stuff I can give it a go.

If you get it worked out please let me know.

about big hit 8" upgrade kit...Bear

Hey,

Your the one that posted pics of the 8" kit right?

Anyway i was wondering if you used the same lenght bolts for the shock as the 01 big hit? If not, could you give me the new lenghts?

Thanks a bunch,

Bear

I now got two buddies that have installed the 8" upgrade on their 01 BHs. I'm 99% sure it did use a longer bolt, but I'll check and try to get your the measurement if it does.

Yes, they might be specially valved for that specific bike, but Avalanche will be more than happy to specially valve it for you as well.

You can do the measurements yourself on your Bullit.

Flip your bike over. Measure the distance from the ground to the top of your tire. Also measure your eye to eye distance.

Now remove your shock. And measure the wheel distance to the ground every 1/4" of eye to eye on the shock. You'll also see that you can put a longer stroke shoke on it using the existing shuttle if you'd like, and can go even longer if you have a customer shuttle.

It'll also nicely demonstrate the non-linear rate that the Bullit has.

Anyways, with that info you can send it in to Avalanche and they'll tune a custom shock for you with the rate you give them. You can easily go to 7"'s without a new shuttle this way.

Dimensions from the Fox site....CraigH

Santa Cruz Shock Model Length (in/mm) Travel (in/mm) Part Number
2000: Bullit FLOAT R 7.875/200 2/50.8 Call
2000: Bullit FLOAT RC 7.875/200 2/50.8 972-72-002-A

Those are the stock shocks that give ~6" of travel.

Playing around with threaded rod with eyes on the end of them you might be able to figure out the maximum & minimum free length.

Personally, I'll probably just go with the 5th Element shock.

One of the guys I have ridden with once or twice has installed a Cove G-Spot Fox Vanilla RC rear shock on his Bullit to get more travel.

Both Rissee & Stratos have long travel kits too.

Hey dude, the Gspot used to use a 2.25" strokeGspotRider
Nov 7, 2001 12:36 AM
the gspot now uses a 2.0"stroke. The shock Shaun is using is a 2.5" stroke his bullit. His stock bullit shock stroke was 2.25".

The bike feels like it has much more travel now. The aftermarket Fox RC feels much smoother than the stock as well. Must be valved differently.
Oops! I thought the Fox shock he was using...CraigH

was from your G-spot.

I think someone posted an email from SC that said something like SC has Fox modify the shock for use on a Bullit. Who knows exactly what they do.

a guy from durango had his bullit outfitted w/ an avalanche rear shock. contact avalanche, they should be able to hook you up.

the tire will slightly rub on the back of your front triangle on huge drops but you dont notice it not like it stops you and you fly over the bars.i have a 2.75 stratos shock this is why i know.

Thanks for all the info. I'll drop Avalanche a line and see if they will set me up with a longer stroke. If any one has any more info post it or email me.

Thanks,

well woulja look at that?!?! I'm digging the entire thing except the drill out the shock mount part. This is very appealing however.

Anyone with an engineering degree that can run the numbers and come up with inches of travel for shorter stroke lengths (for those of us with electronics engineering degrees that might not need 8")?

that looks like the exact bike i saw @ moab [nm]narlus
