Pedal misses on big drops...FreakyLetta

I ride a hardtail with platforms and I've been hitting some pretty big drops lately. Even when I hit a smooth transition, if it's big my feet tend to bounce off the pedals on impact. Usually I recover quickly and ride it out, but sometimes it takes a few seconds to get back under control which can suck when it's sketchy. What can I do to prevent this? Thanks.

I'm not a hardtail rider so I could be wrong.

Some guys I watch hop off drops and some manual. Manualing will help you land with your feet on the pedals. Hopping off tends to make your feet float off the pedals in the air. J-hopping or bunnyhopping off a drop to match the tranny landing looks very smooth (I personally haven't mastered the bunnyhop). Bunnyhopping seems to keep the feet and pedals together.

Also, make sure you don't grab the brakes on the landing...especially the front one. Some riders instinctively dab the brake hard on the landings and throw their weight forward.

Yeah and maybe 1% of freeriders (if that). Pro DH racers do not represent the rest of the population very well, both in riding style and riding venues.

Stay with the flat pedals. Try staying in the squatted, more compact position after you land. Don't be so quick to return to your pre-drop standing position, it might help you from popping up and off the pedals so much.

No clips?? why not? and dont give me the old addage of 'they make you crash more' thats a pile of hash. 1, clips give you more control as you can pull the pedals about under you. 2, its far easier to do a 'argh hop' with clips than it is with flats, as you dont need any preperation (i frequently use this technique when i am riding down blind corners and nearly hit trees). Ok, i have been using them for 4 years now, and i have not crashed due to the SPDs in 3 years. I got the SPD's after i was constantly floating off the pedals on drops and especialy on step rides. SPDs rock, WHEN you get used to them.

and move your knees more. Letting the bike more with your feet instead of fighting the bike. I have the same problem as you and when I can remember to do what I state above it really helps. Lots of times I forget because im so glad to be back on the ground.

Also to the above posters: Clipping in isnt a substitute for good technique. Pro's wear clips because it makes them more efficient pedallers....not so they can land drops. They have good technique and could land the drops with flats or clips.

Clips are great(esp. for pedalling and riding through rocky sections) but without good technique they cause you to fight against the bike.

and with good technique clipping in cause you to be a real fast Mofo in pedalling sections and off 20 foot drops.
