| what forks for aeon joker? | Blaze Dec 9, 2001 10:48 AM | | wot front fork is best to go with the 6 inch travel on the rear of my new joker. i get the frame in january so ive got time to look around.i love the way the fox vanilla looks but would i be better of with a jnr T or what? im not worried about the price , i just want to get what ever suits the joker best. |
| me, too | AK Ken Dec 9, 2001 11:22 AM | | I just ordered a Joker and Jr T and wonder if that's too much fork. What about a Z1 with ECC? Or I could always put my old CODA Moto Fork back to work, although I think it does it's best job in it's current application.

| question for ya... | swiss Dec 9, 2001 8:34 PM | | Which towel do you use to wipe your arse? hehe.. As for your original question, what kind of riding do you think you will be doing the most? DH/drops/chairlifts or more of a trail bike/all purpose bike? If it is the first then go DC, if you think it is the 2nd, go SC with thru axle. One thing though is I do not have enough time on a 5" Manitou Black to say either way if it is close to a 5" thru axle like the Supernova. By the way, I liked my Supernova on my old dare than I did my Z1 QR20. michael (would get a joker but mister Banker says no cash, no spend) |
| re: what forks for aeon joker? | mtnbikej Dec 9, 2001 12:36 PM | | The Joker is a freeride frame and the fork you use should compliment it. Use a Boxxer 6" or 7" depending on riding style, or Super T/Jr. T I have a 6" Boxxer on my Bullit and it is perfect. mtnbikej |
| 2nd this answer... | CraigH Dec 9, 2001 10:17 PM | | But I think I would stick with 6" and not go to 7" travel.
I demo'd Jokers with both 5" single & double crowns and the bike warrants a double crown. In the end I went with a Bullit with 6" Boxxer. |
| re: what forks for aeon joker? | wc Dec 9, 2001 12:53 PM | | I currently have a '01 Jr T on mine and it suits the bike very well for freeride type of stuff. If you want an all around trail bike, then you might want a 5" SC. Most people will tell you to put a DC on it regardless but I guess it depends on your style and what you want to do with the bike. I personally am going back towards more of a trail bike and will be selling my Jr T and putting on a Vanilla RLC. I'm also dumping my 321s for some rhyno lites. I believe the Joker performs well set up either way. |
| hey wc... | Ocron Dec 10, 2001 4:38 AM | | drop me an email @ sean@IWantMyMtb.com. |
| really depends on rider and intended use | narlus Dec 9, 2001 3:52 PM | | wc has a good point in that the joker (as well as the bullit, as this question seems to be asked a lot) will work well w/ either a single crown fork or a dual. page Ocron, he's had both a supernova and now a super T.
i've had a stratos FR5 and now a jr T. i'd never go w/ a single crown, mainly because the weight penalty doesn't mean anything to me, and i'd rather have the strength and sturdiness of a dual crown fork. the bike has held up to DH action and drops well.
that said, i do live in new england, and some of our trails have steep, technical climbs. the relaxed head angle of a dual crown fork (i've got 6" of travel in the jr T) makes these difficult. so it's somewhat of a tradeoff in that aspect. climbing out in moab wasn't a chore (well, i could be fitter, but what i meant is that the front wheel stayed put just fine).
if you're just gonna stick w/ trail riding, a stiff singlecrown fork (if one exists) will do you fine. but the bike will probably help you push the envelope, and you might want a dual crown fork later on down the road. but, it seems like most of the '02 forks are closer to 7" of travel, which will probably make the bike a bit too lax, imo. they might be fine for fire road climbs and big hucks a la the north shore, but if you are planning on singletrack climbs, w/ some steeps occasionally, i think it compromises the bike's handling too much.
either way, i've been very happy w/ my joker, and you probably will be as well. |
| Thank You | AK Ken Dec 9, 2001 8:05 PM | | Appreciate all the information; I'm definitely being exposed to points of view I've not heard before. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience and expertise based on actual use rather than the oft encountered "Yeah, my bike rules cuz it's MY bike" mentality.

| Thank You | Dog Welder Dec 9, 2001 8:35 PM | | I got a Joker with a JrT. and I like it. Though I think that if you are going with a DC fork might as well go all the way and get a 20mm front. I run XT disks and when I lay on the front brakes, the braking force will actually pull the QR out of the dropout slightly, but enough to pull the wheel out of alignment. I was thinking of getting a Boxxer, though a 01 SuperT or a MX-6 are both good forks and are probably being sold for a great deal now. Don't go over 7" though cuz you will void the warranty. |
| what narlus said... | Ocron Dec 10, 2001 4:34 AM | | I've had a SuperNova and a Super T on my Joker and they're both good in different ways. If you're going to be doing any DH'ing or big drops a dual crown is definitely the way to go. For all around trail riding with a few drops mixed I like the SuperNova better. (But, the caveat being that's the only SC fork I'd use.) A Super or Jr T can be a good all around fork on the bike, but depending where you ride and what the terrain is like it may not be ideal. |
| 6 inch travel Boxxer..... | Renegade Dec 10, 2001 10:57 AM | | I used to have a 5 inch travel marzocchi, but it never seemed "right". I put the 6 inch boxxer, got the feel I was looking for, and have lost no climbing prowess. |
| re: what forks for aeon joker? | superg Dec 11, 2001 5:31 AM | | singlecrown forks really never felt correct on my 6inch bullit. even for trailriding. the geometry was just too steep for what that 6 inch rear can really tackle.
once I went to the tripleclamp, it was perfect.
I suggest a super T. |
