Shock decisions for a new Bullit(6 posts)

Shock decisions for a new BullitHELLBELLY

I am getting ready to order a new Bullit frame and cannot decide whether I should wait and get it with the new 5th Element shock or get it without a shock at all and put something else on it. I am a big guy at 225lb and I like the idea behind the 5th Element in that you can tune it to be as progressive as you like. This sounds ideal on paper as I have folded frames when my Fox shock bottomed out due it's straight rate, not mention blowing the shock several times on bigger drops. I have concerns however as I am sure many do about the 5th Element's durabilty considering that it uses an air assist and that nobody has tried other than mag cats and pro's.

Everybody seems to like the Avalanche shocks as far as their feel and durability and they could not be any simpler. The Risse Jupiter 5 also seems like a good possibilty. A mechanic I know has high praise for them and the company. What to do? I am itchin' to ride!

BTW, Both the Risse and the Avalanche have sizing for the standard 6" of travel or 8" with some minor modifications. I will be mainly freeriding with this pup and some light DH racing. I want it to still be a decent pedaler (back up the hill, dammit!) so I am not sure if the 8" would be needed.

I wouldn't trust the 5th element either.

I love my Avalanche.

Cool. Do you have an '02 frame? Which size and model Avalanche do you have? On their site they only list the standard 7.875 x 2.25 which I believe only gives you 6". Also do they come with the resevoir mounting bracket and what length tubing do you need for a Bullit? Thanx.
I am going order it without the shock this week. I am all giddy like a kid in a candy store!

But you can just get the avalanche, however.

Get an 8.5" eye to eye, with 2.5 stroke.

1.5 years and it is far better than the fox setup. Much more travel via 8.5 i2i x 2.75 travel. Risse's customer service is great, I've sent my shock back about 3 times for service and seen it back within the week, once by fedex! On the other hand, the durability and feel of an Avalanche is supposed to be insane, but something I cannot comment on first hand.

sent it back 3 times in one and a half years?

that is not impressive. it is pitiful.

Ive had a Monster T for 2 years with no oil changes and an avalanche for one year with no servicing.

Now THAT is durability, but as long as you are happy then I am happy for you =) and will not forsake the Risse after hearing your compliments.
