bullit 01 travel upgrade - or not ?(18 posts)

bullit 01 travel upgrade - or not ?Cupid Stunt
Jan 8, 2002 1:49 PM
hi there.
sorry if this topic has sort of being touched already in messages below, but i thought i might bring ot to the top of the list again just to people see it.

i own a 01 bullit (nice). after the interbike and all the blurb about the 5th element and 7" on the 02 bullit etc, a few folks have been mentioning that one can also upgrade the travel from 6 to 7 inches on the 01 frame. one of the most commonly used words was "avalanche". are you saying that you can stick an avalanche shock in the 01 bullit frame and get more travel out of it? i'd love to believe that, and perhaps try it, but i know that the rear swingarm of the bullit comes pretty close to the seat tube already when making full use of the 6 inches. any similar or contrasting experiences?

also, the 01 bullit is designed to go with 6" forks, no more, right? anybody riding it with more travel up front? how's it feel?

cheers, and i hope i can get this travel upgrade thang straight after your replies...
02 Bullit has 7" travel with 5th Element shock...CraigH

6" if you get the Fox Vanilla RC.

By changing the shock on your older Bullit to the new 5th Element (or another brand shock of the same eye to eye and stroke) you can upgrade your 2001 Bullit to 7" rear travel. Avalanche has a shock that will give you 8" of travel, but their instuctions require modifying the frame slightly. (Check their site for pics.)

The 01 and older Bullits are designed to use a maximum of 6" travel forks. Lots of people run 7" forks though.

02 Bullit has 7" travel with 5th Element shock...BostonBullit

CraigH is correct (as usual)! I'll fill in some info though in case you haven't been following the upgrade path info as intently as some of us :)

5th Element: After Progressive fufills their commitment to SC for the 5th Element shocks for the '02 bikes you will be able to buy the shock and new shuttle as an aftermarket upgrade from SC. No price has been set, but the new parts are direct bolt ons and will bring your 01 Bullit to 7" of rear travel.

Avalanche: There are a couple options here. There is the extreme path that has you bolt on a 9"x3" shock to get 8" of travel while keeping something near the original shock rate. This is done by bolting the front eye of the shock directly to the frame (in the rear shuttle hole) instead of to the shuttle. You'll need to drill out that hole to get a nice strong bolt to fit though. This will dork up your warrenty. You could also go the ZonicMan route and put in a 8.5"x2.5" Avalanche and get 7" of rear travel using all the original mounts. These are basically the same numbers that the new 5th Elements are supposed to be. They also have another one that is a direct replacement for the 6" travel that keeps you at 6 but is supposed to be muuuch nicer than the Fox.

So there ya have it, you now have a choice between 6, 7, and 8" of rear travel for your bullit; limited only by the depth of your pockets and your comfort level with drilling a big hole in your frame ;)

I just ride with Craig, he does the endless hours of homework. ;P

the 5th element is supposd to be ~ $350 USD, or ~ $500 CAD. Don't hold me to it. If I'm wrong, heard it form Craig during a ride and was not paying attention to anything but the trail. Jim (plain old 6" Jr. T and plain old Fox 6"er.) Rides great!

$350US for shock & new style shuttle, $325US for just shock. (Price from SC.) Mine is on order now.

Also, Risse & Stratos have kits to take your Bullit up to 7" of travel. Check their pages for more info. A guy locally has done a 7" conversion with a Fox Vanilla RC.

Risse & Stratos also make shocks to replace the stock Fox Vanilla RC and keep it at 6" of travel.

I'm outta the loop! :( hehehe, thanks for the update Craig

I am currently BostonBullitLess....I sold my late season 00 frame to a buddy and put an 5th Element '02 on order. The Avalanche still beckons but I figure I'll give the Progressive a try first....

Latest news from my LBS (new SC dealer this year) is that they expect to begin shipping the 5th equipped Bullits in the next couple of weeks. Oh, and I saw a memo dated Dec 13th that said that the first run of V10 frames was just aboot sold out, if anyone cares....

Early 02 swingarm here.

My brother has a 02 front and back with the Fox from their crash replacement program.

Are you moving your current build kit over to the new frame? If so are you upgrading to a 8" rotor on the back? I think it is worth it.

I heard the 2 week ship date for 5th Bullits as well. Been talking to SC directly about the 5th as I needed info to order it.
yea, gonna...BostonBullit

Current plan is to just move the componants from the last build over and only change a couple things...

Keeping:
01 SuperT, Kore B-52 stem, Rhynolite Rims (until they die), NS XS cranks and RF bottom bracket (square), SDG BigBoy saddle, Hayes hydros, Easton Scanduim DH riser bars

Being replaced:
Rear der, rear shifter (both just aboot dead), seatpost (went with the ol frame), rear 6" rotor upgrade to 8"

Being Added:
chainguide (looking at Evil right now)

Being dropped:
front der (also went with old frame) and shifter

thems the current plans anyhow...we'll see if things change as the winter drags on. My buddy has a powder coating kit and I'm toying with the idea of coating some of the parts to match the new frame color (Trans Red)...think it would be cool..except for the fact that my SuperT will look like a Boxxer!

LOL! A trans red SuperT will keep them guessing! NMCraigH

the LBS got off the phone with SC and said that the new frame should ship in about 2 weeks....but I'm thinking that I won't see it till end of month at the earliest as there are probably a few people in line ahead of me! don't worry...numerous pics will be posted as photography is my other hobby :)

per S.C.

He has a different Bullit he keeps out in Breckenridge which uses a Romic shock which gives him 7" of travel. He loves the new Romic and I think it's less expensive than the 5th Element so should be considered too.

Will the day soon come where EVERYONE rides Bullits? Oh, I think so.

So when are YOU getting one? NMCraigH

There are very few bikes like Bullit available on the markets, and it has proved to be very ridig and bullitproof. I'm going to get one.
Same specs with the same price? Perhaps new Azonic Eliminator competes
greatly with Bullit, but there's too many pivots -> more maintenance.
And because Azonic frame is just introduced, there's very few reviews of it.
