Already have a Z1 fork, and odds and ends.... riding all round with an increasing interest in DH at speed, and drops, jumps.

| re: help me with parts for my Bullit | BigHitFSR Jan 9, 2002 12:46 AM | | If you dot have cranks yet get some tubular cro-mo's.
They will last you forever, well worth the extra weight.
The best ones are profiles.
Wheels depending on how much you want to spend.
You want a rim with a wide profile at least at the front.
Try hope bulb hubs with mavic D321 rims.
The hope bulbs are a good choice as they can be converted to 20mm thru axle (front only), bolt up, standard quick release.
The expensive option would be a mavic deemax wheelset.
Both light for DH.
XT Discs are really cheap on mail order (upgrade to 8 inch).
Lots of people really like Hayes hyros, I find them very on/off.
Hopes are the best, enduros for your application (power + modulation + sick levers).
I cant really decide on stems myself.
I use 75mm 10deg rise.
Get one with no welds (all forged or cnc'ed).
Consider Flesh Removal !!!
Azonic Shorty's are pretty good/safe but expensive for what you get.
Seat Posts differ much.
Try to get something with no join.
Its usually good to have 1-2 inches of offset (helps keep the weight back).
Dont spend much, there are heaps of silly expensive seatposts out there. |
| re: help me with parts for my Bullit | thx big hit Jan 9, 2002 1:09 AM | | my thoughts were/are
* Alex D32's (36h) with Funn hubs (have option for std or qr20)
* Hope Enduros or XT
* 75 or 100mm shorty, or copy thereof, or RF DH stem @ 90mm
* Titec Hellbent seat post.
Thanks |
| re: help me with parts for my Bullit | -Taz Jan 9, 2002 1:44 AM | | I'm going to get following parts to my Bullit.
Rims: Mavic D321
Hubs: Hope bulb hubs (20mm axel front)
Stem: Azonic Shorty 50mm
Seat post: Azonic
Brakes: Hope Enduro4 and 8" discs
If your running on low(er) budget Shimano XT disc brakes
and hubs are superb. |
| re: help me with parts for my Bullit | auntesther Jan 9, 2002 7:21 AM | | would get ther atom lab air corp wheelset, if you wanna go prebuilt, stem, go azonic or Kore B1B, post, cant go wrong with Thomson but I like Race Face as well. disk, I like the avid mechanicals but Hayes are great also |
| here's my setup.... | BostonBullit Jan 9, 2002 8:22 AM | | just sold my frame to a buddy to trade away, but here's what I had on it (most of which will be going on the new 02 bullit frame when it comes in):
King headset
01 SuperT
Sun RhynoLites laced to Marzocchi 20mm front and Hayes XT rear 32h hubs
Kore B-52 stem (60mm 0deg)
Easton Scanduim DH riser (1.5" i think)
RaceFace NorthShore XS cranks (34/26) with RF bottom bracket
Shimano XTR front der, deore rear der and LX 8sp rapid fire shifters
Hayes hydro brakes (6" rear 8" front)
Thomson seatpost w/SDG BigBoy saddle (hella comfy)
Snafu platform pedals
Nokian Gazz Jr 2.6" tires front and back with hutch green DH tubes.
complete bike weighed in at around 40lbs but was fairly bombproof. The weakpoint was mainly the rims which started to loose true when I got to the point of doing repeated 4-6ft drops on rides. The rest of the setup never had a problem with it though. I plan on putting them on the new frame until they die, then getting something stronger. A good amount of the weight in my buildup comes from the tire/tube combo which weighs in at like 3+lbs per wheel (just in rubber). might be a bit excessive for freeriding but I'll tell ya what, I haven't had a flat since I built the bike summer before last!
I prefer the on/off style of the Hayes, but the Shimano XTs are nice and a bit cheaper. I don't like the Hopes (it's right in the name man.."oh shiet! I HOPE I stop!!)...
Good luck!

| Mine... | CraigH Jan 9, 2002 8:33 AM | | Wheelset : Mavic 321 with Hayes 20mm front, Hugi rear
Seatpost : Thompson
Stem : Ameoba (sp?) 75mm, no idea of rise, with Roach pad (I'm thinking of trying something around 60mm just out of curiosity)
Brakes - discs : 8" Hayes front and back
If you are trying to keep the weight down, you might want to look for a lighter rim (Mavic 519) and a lighter stem than I'm using. This won't be a DH orientated though.
If you are interested in using your Bullit for DH, you should look for another fork, something with a double crown. |
| Why not just go with what works? | Zonic Man Jan 9, 2002 8:39 AM | | I am SICK of experimenting with this or that. Everyone on this board seems to have their own opinion, however, most of the suggestions are of stuff that really does not work. Bostonbullit has the best suggestions, so far.
Seatpost/stem: Get a Thomson. I recommend a 90mm stem, because you will be riding the bike ALL AROUND. 90mm is a fine trade-off. Be realistic. This bike will be ridden for some XC, right? Thomson posts and stems are the best, period.
Wheelset: If you are hard on rims, get the D521s. Lace them to some fairly light hubs like Kings or Hadleys. If you are not hard on rims, the Mavic F519 is a bit lighter than the 521s. Actually, 120 grams, which is quite a bit lighter for rims. The Alex rims and Funn hubs will be very heavy. Go with double butted DT spokes, as well.
Brakes, of course, are personal: I have ridden Shimano, Hope, and Hayes. Hayes are the most reliable discs I have ever owned. They simply work, all the time. The shimanos are really really good. I am a big boy, and I use teh 6" version fine. I have used them at downieville, which is a sustained 17 mile downhill with no problems. Hope, realistically, in a real world, SUCK ASS because they are so finicky and unreliable. As a rider, I don't want to worry about my brakes. I just want to ride. Every ride I go on, some Hope user is always having some problem. Oh, and I have owned O2s, and Enduros in the past. So, I say shimano. |
| A couple more ideas..... | Dusty Bottoms Jan 9, 2002 9:58 AM | | Mayn good suggestions above. Definitely go with Thomson post & stem. The Race Face post is weaker since it's 2 pieces(black post pressed into silver clamp), and ends up creaking. However, the Thomson post should only be used with seats that have 7mm rails(per their website). Using other seats could be dangerous and would surely void the warranty. The RF DH stem is also 2 pieces(+ bar clamp)and it ends up twisting ALL THE TIME! |

| if the Z1 is new, trade it asap | JimC Jan 9, 2002 12:01 PM | | for a DC one like Jr. or Super T., Boxxer, whatever. You'll just wind up doing it one way or the other later on. The Z1 is too flexy.
Discs. Put on DH ones: Hope, Magura, Hayes, doesn't matter, just don't use an XC set of discs.
The rest you can read other posts on, it's fine stuff that's been suggested. Jim |
