Buying Canadian, living in US. Bad Idea??? (5 posts)
| Buying Canadian, living in US. Bad Idea??? | AntONE Jan 9, 2002 12:42 PM | | Basically, i want a norco VPS frame. But they are a predominantly Canadian company so i was wondering if anyone thinks it would be a problem owning one of these frames living in NY state? I will purchase it through Landry's bike shop, the US distibutor, located in Mass. about 3hrs from my area. Problems i am refering to are warranty if needed, spare parts (der. hangers, i guess thats it)etc. Any thoughts? if i go local, my choices are FTW and BMW, both, honestly but i hate to say it, WAY out of my price range and not really the kind of bike im looking for. If a go national id say santa cruz bullit, but i dont like there sizing to much; Big hit, dont like 24". So, my dilemma is do i get a comfortable, kick ass dual suspension frame at a great price even though not a local company, or look elsewhere? any advice is greatly appreciated as i have never purchased a new frame before. My logic, there isnt a whole lot i can see going wrong on the frame so it should be okay. My other half says, you FOOL, what are you getting yourself into!. well, enough rambling, thanks again to all those who can help |
| No more than me and my Bullit in Canada | JimC Jan 9, 2002 2:19 PM | | I've helped a NJ rider get a VPS frame from here in BC, and he loved it. You can get Canadian pricing from http://www.johnhenrybikes.com in Vancouver. I believe the cost to ship it was $70 USD. Because of free trade (NAFTA), there should be no duty issues. Ask to ship it ground mail, to avoid brokerge fees bu shippers...slower, but way less $$$.
Ask for Kenny Maude (of Extreme video fame), tell him I sent ya. At least you can get competitive pricing. many of us here on the boards live in BC, and know and ride with NORCO folks, we can help with any waranty stuff, but haven't had to, to date.
Cheers, Jim (nope I don't work for these or any shops, I sell telecom stuff) |

| 3 hour drive to get frame parts??? | Fergie Jan 10, 2002 11:52 AM | | I don't think it matters in what country the bikes are made, or where the company headquarters is, but the shop you get it from shoud be close if possible. I have an Uzzi SL that has been pretty bomb proof, but you never know what can happen. For example, I accidently stripped on of the bolts on the suspension, and also after a few years of use, it developed a little play, and needed a small part replaced. Both of these could have been a major hassle if I had to drive for hours. Oh yeah, four hangers in the past two years or so.
If you live anywhere near southern NY, check out downcycles.com - where I got my bike. I don't work for the shop, but I highly recommend it.
