| DH frame manufacturers and quality control... | Christopher Robin Jan 28, 2002 4:18 PM | | Ok, soon I'll be thinking about looking at a new DH frame. Here's the thing, I REFUSE to have a frame that is less than perfect in terms of alignment and craftmanship. Does that mean I should be looking at US made frames, or are there some companies that have their frames made in Taiwan but still have strict quality control standards?
For example, my 2000 Giant DH frame was near perfect except the rear linkage upper linkage was a little off. It was barely visible when the rear wheel was installed (the chainstays were fine). It didn't do anything negative to the function of the suspension but still, after you pay an arm and a leg or a frame I think people are entitled to get a flawless product. Let me know if I'm right or if I'm talking unreasonably like someone who's on crack. Thanks a lot everyone! |

AKA Ellsworth rig`s |
| My '01 DHi is perfect | MMike Jan 28, 2002 5:28 PM | | ...and it was welded in Taiwan. I wouldn't eliminate the possibility. Tell ya what....I'll even sell it to ya!!
Yetis are definitely a work of art though. |
| Don't buy Karpiel if you plan on getting a perfect frame | urbanman Jan 28, 2002 6:23 PM | | My Karpiel wasn't even close to what you should get from a frame that expensive. The bb threads weren't quite straight(a little wobble in them), I has to file metal off the dropout to get a wheel to fit in it, and Jan did a bad job of reaming my ht to put a steelset in. Oh, and my brake still doesn't work right because there is a huge glob of paint on the brake tab. I think it is BS, but I hear some of this stuff is standard issue for some small bike manufaturers. On a good note, that doesn't include Ellsworth. Everyone I've seen, including my own, is very nice. Everything is damn hear perfect, and the things that aren't let you know that a human made it not a machine. |

| Karpeil | BigHitFSR Jan 28, 2002 9:14 PM | | Geez that karpeil story is a bit of a conern.
My mate bought one second hand (99 disco volante).
I was concerned when we were checking it out that it had been re-painted because the paint job did not look like what you would expect for such an expensive USA made frame.
Also the cranks come within milimeters of the rear triangle and the bottom link is millimeters from the BB shell.
If you buy a frame USA made or not check it out if its at all doggy send it back. For what they cost it should be 100% perfect or its should be sold as a factory second. |
| Buy local | Summit Jan 29, 2002 2:05 AM | | hm if you are concerned whether the frame is PERFECT or not
i think it is the best to buy from a local manafacturer; lets say not more than 5 Hours away from your home.
so if there is something wrong with the frame just go there, be a nice customer, and beat the shit out of the people who force you to use a file on your frame to perfect the alignment oft the rear brake ;-)))) |
| All companies have some issues | karpiel disco Jan 29, 2002 5:06 AM | | It doens't matter what comany you have you are always going to be partial and say that it is free from quality issues... i have lots of experience building bikes from bare frames with many different companies. there are quality iees all around.. Custom is always better than stock anyway. Kapiel: I have a 2002 disco and it is in perfect shape. ( but you do haev to take a file to the read driveside drop out. same with my bude armi. IT is the nature oft he frame. My budgs fiances foes came in and the angule seat adjustment doesn't work the holes dont line up and we had to grind down the brake adator cause the brake tabs were put on wrong... Customising the bike is all about the bigger more expensive bikes.. the more you spend the more you haev to work to get everything to work....... Quite bitchin and get ridin' |
