| Dorado vs. Shiver | walker Jan 28, 2002 6:46 PM | | I'll be using the Uzzi SLX frame for freeriding, downhill racing, and some XC, and was wondering about forks for the frame. I want to get an inverted fork, mostly for the coolness factor, but anyways, which fork is more plush, the shiver or dorado? Does the hexagonal dropouts of the dorado help, or is it just a gimmick ? What's the largest tire that can be fitted on either of these forks? |
| Shiver | BigHitKyle Jan 28, 2002 7:20 PM | | I have a Shiver and it is very plush. I have never ridden a Dorado though. I know that a 3inch tire can be fit on a Shiver. Also I think that if I was getting another fork that I would get a Dorado because they are supposedly much more stiffer. Many pro downhiller use then. I suggest riding both the forks and deciding which one you like better. Hope this helps. |
| Definetly Shiver | Twister Jan 28, 2002 8:10 PM | | one of the guys i ride with was eric carters mechanic for a few months and he said the forks are flexy front to back and they break alot. the breaking thing i think manitou wouldve fixed by now, but i still believe they would be flexy. they are a weenie looking fork (just like the xvert carbon). i myself would go with the shiver. |
| less flex in Dorado than Shiver. | mtnbikfrut Jan 28, 2002 11:28 PM | | Weenie looking fork. gasp!
I take offense @ that.
They are actually quite beefy looking. I would grant the xvert is "weenie" looking. But look how many races people have won on them :)
My Dorado twists much less than my buddies shiver @ a stand still. I can tell you also that my Dorado Tracks very well in the rough stuff here in Santa Barbara.
My friends' Shiver is smoother at this point, but the Answer guys are having a lookie at my fork because it isn't quite right.
I think once they get it straightened out, it will be as plush.
Plus, it is how many lbs lighter? (Dorado weighs 7 lbs)
You don't see but a few people who race with Shiver's. And that is my genre, so that is why I like the Dorado thus far.

| yeah, weenie looking | Jm Jan 29, 2002 9:01 AM | | compared to this(notice headtube size).

| Right on Bro | Southbay bomber Jan 29, 2002 9:02 AM | | I hope what you say is true. It was a toss up between the shiver and dorado. The dorado on the intense VVP sold me. |
| Right on Bro, like the B.H. | hkygoon Jan 29, 2002 12:08 PM | | love my shiver. Did I help? |
| anyhow(more info) | Jm Jan 29, 2002 9:04 AM | | The Expert-Racers I ride with on sundays swear up and down over shivers(they have them on their bikes). They have ridden the Dorado and say that it is "just stiff enough" to race on, not what they are looking for. We were talking about this quite a bit, personally I did not get to ride a dorado because it was leaking all over the place and the mechanics took it back.
At a stand still? |
| anyhow(more info) | mtnbikfrut Jan 30, 2002 6:16 PM | | stand still means when the bike is not moving. One method of testing the flex is to put the wheel between the legs and twis the bars. Granted this is not a perfect tell-tale test. But it does tell you something about its torsional flex (correct name for twist/flex?).
leaking all over the place, that stinks :(
cheers,

| Shiver | SlackBoy Jan 29, 2002 3:17 AM | | the hot setup on the dorado is to run a normal stem not the intergrated one. Apprently a lot of the pros were having probs in crashes with twisting the top crown or their bars when crashing as they are all solidly attached. Not so much a prob for pros as i'm sure they will have access to plenty of crowns, but not for everyone else. |
| Tire clearance--Shiver can NOT clear a 3.0 | urbanman Jan 29, 2002 11:08 AM | | I had a Shiver on my bullit which has a smaller than normal(for DH) head tube. I put a 3.0 in there and it buzzed just before bottom out. I had the fork all the way down in the crowns(actually a little past the top of the fork) and couldn't ride with a 3.0. Now on my Karpiel there is now way for a 3.0 to fit. My Kujo 2.65 is within 5mm upon bottom out. |

| re: Dorado | karpiel disco Jan 29, 2002 4:54 AM | | Dorado all the way . It is much lighter than the shiver and is an excellent fork. I had ridden the shiver and bought the dorado after talking to reni at mount snow.. I now have the dorado and iti s a bas a$$ fork.. |
| Tire clearance on Dorado | urbanman Jan 29, 2002 11:10 AM | | Can a 3.0 fit in there on your Disco? I can't tell if that's what you're running or not. |
| Tire clearance on Dorado | karpieldisco Jan 29, 2002 9:07 PM | | Honestly I have never put a 3.0 on any on my rides.. one of my teamates lives on a 3.0 but honestly i don't see the need. I do believ that there is more than enough room in there for a 26" 3.0 ... I will have to try. good question. email me and I'll try it this weekend.. |
| Dorado & Shiver weigh nearly the same... | go-ride.com Jan 29, 2002 8:53 AM | | I have a few of each fork in-stock. I weighed them both with full steer tubes, axles and fork guards. The Shiver weighed 8.7 lbs. and the Dorado weighed 8.5 lbs. Granted the upper crown of the Dorado does have the lower part of the stem attached, but the weights are still so close that I would not let that be a factor in deciding between these two nice forks.
