KONA STINKY 2001 OR 2002? | biker guy Jan 29, 2002 3:39 PM | | Let me get this straight, you can get a 2002 stinky for cheaper than a 2001? as well as getting a 2002 for $300 below msrp?? Thats a deal. I own a 2001 stinky, and I have upgraded just about everything on it. I bought sun rhyno lite rims, avid mechs, panaracer fire DH tires and a marzocchi Z1 freeride. I would wait the 20 days for the 2002 stinky. If you can, try to switch out the ditch witch rims right off the bat cuz they suck big time. Other than the hayes mechanicals, there's not much diff between the 01 and 02 stinky. Wait the 20 days and put the extra hundred bucks into some new rims. |

The big diff I see between 2001 and 2002 are that the 2001 comes with a Vanilla R shock and the 2002 only a Vanilla. No rebound adjust is a big difference esp on a freeride bike. It was a big enough difference that made me choose a 2K1 Stinky Five Special Edition over waiting for a 2002 Stinky. The 2002 comes with Hayes Mech disks and 9-speed while the 2001 comes with V-brakes and 8-speed. Other than that they are pretty much the same.
One nice thing about the 2001 is that it comes disk-ready if you want to upgrade later. The 2002, with disks, *may* come with disk-only seat-stays (my Stinky Five is like that) so you can't run V's in the back if that's what you like (or need while waiting for parts). If you can get a good a deal on a 2K1 Stinky Five I'd go for that instead. |
