| Clearcoating a Steel frame | sam16 Dec 9, 2003 7:28 PM | | I am having a local frame builder build me a steel hardtail jumping/freeride frame. Instead of painting it I would like to just put a clearcoat over the steel. I asked a local powder coater if he could just clearcoat it instead of painting it but he said that the clearcoat would not stick to the steel correctly. Is this true? Is there any way to clearcoat a steel frame with no paint? If it makes a difference the material is 4130 chromoly steel. This may be a dumb question but would it work to buy a can of spray on clear coat or would it be to hard to apply evenly?
Thanks,

| thats odd.... | zedro Dec 9, 2003 8:06 PM | | the moto shop that welded my 4130 frame said they could do a clear powdercoat no problem.
i dont see why a regular clearcoat wouldnt stick if you clean and sand it properly. |

Sounds like you oughtta find a new powdercoater.
