More bottom bracket questions.....shaine

So let's talk about the difference about ISIS and square taper. Seriously, is there a real difference? Is one better for FR as opposed to XC? PricePoint has the prodigy DH cranks with an ISIS BB on sale. But I also found a sweet pair of Next LP's on ebay that are square taper.
I hate weak feeling cranks, I like really stiff arms.
Please advise.
don't buy the Prodigy stuff then...namaSSte

I'm biased as far as being anti Shimano so bear that in mind but I think the RF Turbines and Next Cranks rock. The Next LP's are really just the Turbines with some added bling, even the boys at RF will tell you there's no real stiffness/performance pickup over the Turbines. They are really stiff and therefore transfer power incredibly well. I have had some bad luck with Truvativ products so I shouldn't comment there (although I hear their DH crank is pretty nice). Another option to consider if you want strong cranks is to look at bmx cranks (I use Profiles on my BMX bike). A good 3 pc bmx crank (euro bb) is gonna hold up great and not be too heavy to be impractical.

As for the square/ISIS debate, it's a real cna o' worms. Clearly there are issues with bearing size on the ISIS stuff because of the larger spindle. That said, I do like the crank interface much better. I'm not sure which is the best way to go but I do know that I have had some creaks when I ran square tapers (always cured by a little grease) but have never had any real bearing play, the bb's lasted forever basically but were heavy. Since going to ISIS 3 years ago, I've been through 4 bb's and I'm on my second crankset and I ride aggressive xc, not big hucking or dh. Granted the interface is sweet, I really don't get creaks, and they are lighter. Guess the jury is really still out. I do think the 4 bearing setups might improve the load distribution and thus bearing life on some of the newer dh isis bb's so that's what I am going to purchase tonight.

Hope this helps a little. Good luck.

Here are a couple to consider, I use these Profiles and love them and I have never heard a bad thing about the Crupi's (and the spider lets you pick from more chainrings too).

Speaking of the Profile's, I'll be taking them on a ride tonight since they just opened an indoor bmx track only 25 mins from my house!!!!! Get the kids ready for bed and let me wife handle the tuck in, out the door by 7:30, ride until 10, beer with the boys, and I'm home by 11:30. Take a look at this track!!!

Square vs. ISIS, main difference.TNC

The big reason that the switch to ISIS from Square occurred is spindle strength. While an ISIS spindle can be broken, like anything can, it's less likely than the older square spindle. When bikes and riding style got more and more aggressive, square spindles started snapping off more frequently. In the not too distant past, we saw some nice gore pictures on this forum of rider's ankles and calves gouged pretty good from snapped square spindles. That being said, most riders can probably ride square spindles without too much concern, because honestly most riders don't get as crazy to require a stronger spindle. It's a safety margin. I also agree that the interface is better to reduce creaking and loosening. Though the bearings may have a higher failure rate because of available bearing space, a failed bearing usually doesn't result in the spindle snapping off unexpectedly.

It also depends on the quality, cheap ISIS BB's are way weaker than a good square taper. I've snapped the shimano ISIS BB's on a regular basis. I'll take square taper over shimano ISIS.
Shimano's not ISIS--Octalink or something.TNC

They look kinda similar, but they're not the same standard.
