buying used pro DH bikes ?nxdh
Dec 11, 2003 12:07 AM
I've got a opportunity to buy
a yeti dh9
and a yeti hardtail
from Nathan Rennie
and in the past had opportunities
to buy bikes from Chris Kovarik
when they were up for replacement

what do people think of buying used bikes
from professional racers ?

is the pro's stuff past there use by dates
when they sell them off
when they get their new rigs ?

Dude, Rennie rides HARD. No way I'd buy his bike unless he hadn't used it! Actually come to think of it, Rennie and Kovaric are probably the last two pros I'd buy a used bike from, they both ride hard as balls.

Something like Lopes' DH bike, now that would be okay, probably ridden once all year, or one of the '03 Maxxis team Turners, since they switched to '04s pretty early in the season.

Go for it if Rennie says it's in good shape.

You'd be surprised how well taken care of the Pro's bikes actually are. My boy raced Dustin Adams bike for a year and that frame still has a season or more of dhrace left in her.

didnt rennie ride an IH bike last year?
That Yeti must have been sitting in his basement for a year
or ridden by some other cat. find that shi7 out first.

A friend of mine bought Chris Kovariks bike last winter........it was his back-up bike. It was only ridden a handful of times......he got a great deal on it.....it was in fantastic condition.....

Just curious. The only pro bikes I've seen for sale: I remember seeing both Krispy's Army and Vic Marlow's Apoc on ebay a while ago...but I'm sure that's not what you guys are talking about.

So do the pros just sell their rigs when they get new ones? Or do they hang on to them? Same thing with freeriders. Say they get a new bike, then all of a sudden switch sponsors, do they keep the old bike? Does the company make them give it back?

He got the Kovarik bike off the net somewhere........not sure where but he is an internet Hound, he got a nice bike for the $$$.

Another friend of mine bought Leigh Donovans schwinn like 2 years ago.......it was either on EBay or in MTBR classifieds...

Just gotta keep your eyes peeled.

Rennie and Kovarik live locally
and quite often go riding with the locals
from where they started

so when they change bikes or there bikes
are no longer used they sell them thru
the local DH bike shops

so you basically have to be at the right place
at the right time to pick up these opportunities
i guess they get to keep their old rigs
when they get their new ones

kovarik just sold his Tazer FS & Tazer HT
rennie currently has for sale
his torquoise YETI dh9 and HT
and one of his ironhorse hollowpoints

rennie reckons there a bit scratched
and in need of a new sticker kit
but very well looked after
by a professinal mechanics
and has all the trick stuff
they race with
xtr dorados mrp 321's easton etc etc

Yeah I was just surfing the classifieds and I came across some Hopes that Dustin Adams was getting rid of. He got a new ride with new sponsors so he wanted to get rid of them. I didn't buy them but I bet a lot of them just post on websites.
Just remember some pro's bikes are custom....LT1

...I seem to recall some of the Intense team bikes use thinner tubing and may have modified headtubes as well. Thinner tubes are for lighter weight, the headtube mod usually is facing down of the lower cup side to increae head angle - depending on rider. I can't say the same for the Yeti's but since these are handbuilt and custom, most likely they do have thinner tubes. They may also have other mods, like custom geometry.

If you can, inspect and try before you buy.
i cant see the manufacturer letting those go though...zedro

especially if they can squeeze some RnD out of it. But ya, i've heard Turner does this as well (i believe MBA got a demo of it for an article).

I've read and heard about it in a few different places. Basically, if a consumer got ahold of it and it failed, the company could be held responsable to some extent.

My friend has a prototype Fly. He called up Foes and supposedly it's the only 1.5" Fly every made. He's very proud of it. Insists on getting a Manitou Breakout just cause no one else could. BUT he also has no warranty whatsoever if anything happens according to Foes.
