| Not a Mauler....Route 66 | KLars Dec 11, 2003 11:15 PM | | mosplat,
That silver one is not a mauler. There were 2 "Route 66" frames built for '02 Interbike with the 1.5" headtube. The site owner at feedthehabit.com owned one (the silver) and the other is owned by Incubus (red with Sherman in the other thread)
I think the only difference between the Mauler and Route 66 was the Mauler has the custom anodizing. Someone can correct me if I am wrong. Either way, they were both one-offs.
The RFX is sadly not produced any longer. |

| paging airwreck | FM or MF Dec 12, 2003 12:07 PM | | Hey, is your frame a small? How tall are you?
I'm 5'-8" and I'm wondering if I should consider a small. (bonus: they're cheaper and available) |
| get the medium. | airwreck Dec 12, 2003 9:26 PM | | but if my small isn't really a small after all, then I could be wrong. my bike sure feels small. I'm 5-5. |
| old shot of mine | Hubba Dec 12, 2003 7:50 AM | | several changes since then, it started out more as a heavy duty xc bike (31lbs in this form) but as I've gotten more into drops and stunts the components are getting upgraded...

| Those are beautiful bikes all of them - too bad Turner.......... | CTRider Dec 12, 2003 12:42 PM | | discontinued the RFX - I take it that the 5Spot differs enough from the RFX am I right?
The RFX just looks burlier than the current 5Spots.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but did the RFX have fairly long top tubes? All those bikes in this thread look to have really long TTs.
This is some of the finest bike porn I've seen in months! Keep the pics coming! |
| Q for the RFX-perts...... | sub6 Dec 12, 2003 5:04 PM | | Looking at these pics, a few things spring to mind:
Some of 'em have a wraparound headtube gusset, some don't
Some of 'em have "labyrinth" hydro cable guides, some don't
At least one has chainguide tabs
I think the 2002 has the HT gusset, no ISCG tabs, and traditional cable guides, it would appear. Anybody care to break down how the RFX evolved between, say, 2000 and 2002?? There also seems to be some difference in the angles of the "seat-tube brace" on top of the top-tube.
Thanks.... |
| I know Some breakdown | RFXR Dec 12, 2003 5:24 PM | | The 2002s had ISCG tabs as far as i know, and they did have traditional cable routing along the side of the frame, and a longer seattube to toptube brace, and the type of headtube gussets you see on almost all of the pictures. 2002s also have Silver Torx bolts at the pivots.
I have what Dave calls the 2001-2002 transition model It has the Tubing thickness of of the 2002 frames which have the thickest tubeset of all RFXs. My bike also has no cable stops, it was designed with top mounted full housing guides for the cables, they went back to this type of routing on the Lucky 7, Mauler, and Route 66s. My bike also has a shorter brace from TT to ST, and it is a 17.5in medium. According to Dave i have one of the few RFXs that he did call the transition model, as he was experimenting with tubesets, and geometry between 2001 and 2002, as most of the 2001s were a lighter duty bike than the 2002s on which he used a heavy tubeset.
2001s look much like the 2002s, but have a lighter tubeset.
Thats the extent of my Turner Knowledge, when i talked to Dave he said there are many many variations of RFXs out there, and that is not to mention the custom work that could have been done on the frames too, by request of the origional purchaser.

| I'll share what I know | Bulldog Dec 12, 2003 6:14 PM | | This is from my claimed 2001 and from viewing other bikes as well.
'00:
-I'm not too familiar with it, but I think they have shorter tt lengths
'01:
-wraparound ht gusset - to increase lower ht thickness
-no ISCG
-V-brake cable stops on ft triangle, disc-only rear
-5" plates stock (I think, that's what I got)
-Fox RC
-designed for 5" fork
-super low top tube, my 19.5" tt barely clears the rocker/shock and has a large cross brace. Top tube of a 13-13.5" frame. On some other bikes the tt appears higher.
'02:
-thicker DHR headtube, no wraparound needed
-ISCG
-zip tie disc hose guides
-6" plates
-Romic shock
-designed for 6" fork
**I'm no expert, and some details are probably wrong, but that's the best I got. |
| Cool, thanks to both you guys..... | sub6 Dec 12, 2003 6:37 PM | | Mine has wraparound gusset, no ISCG, 5" plates, brake cable stops, and no Torx bolts, which sounds like a pure 2001. (it looks just like yours, Bulldog)
Yeah, it seems like there's a lot of variations out there.
Cool bike, I had to sell all the parts to be able to afford the frame, can't wait 'til I'm flush enough to build it up...... |
| Hmmm...Rear Disk Mount is different... | KLars Dec 12, 2003 6:59 PM | | My June '02 vintage frame has ISCG, "S" rear brake cable guides (not zip ties), thicker DHR headtube and came with a Fox RC. (Romic was an option though) My frame looks to be exactly like Bonk's frame.
I know the geometry changed some from '01 to '02. (like Bulldog said, from designed for a 5" fork to designed for a 6" fork) The top tube was lenghted a little I think too.
What I think is weird is my RFX's rear disk brake mount is machined out in the middle, just like Espen's frame in the picture above.
I have noticed on the 5-spots they chose not to machine out the mount, just like some of the RFX's above have the solid disk mount when it looks like mine, Espen's, and MikeD's all have open ones.
Wonder why...cost or was that a weak spot? Can say I have ever known anyone to rip off their rear brake mount. |
| So is mine | RFXR Dec 12, 2003 7:47 PM | | Ive got the 01.5 frame and I have bolt on disc tabs, it is not like some of the bolt on XCE disc tabs, but much more burly, dave said his idea behind this was to be aible to buy an adapter to convert the frame to a 8in DH rotor, instead of an adapter to bolt to your tabs, then to the caliper. I dont think his origional intentions were ever fulfilled, but it is stiff as hell, and never loosens. Another thing about my frame is that even though its not a straight 02 but an 01.5, it seems to be meant for a 6-7in fork as well. KLars, it is quite possible you have the seatstay off of an XCE, as they probably have the same strength as the origional RFX seatstay, and they had the XCEs in stock so they put it on, that could be the reason of the machined out tabs.

| So is mine | KLars Dec 13, 2003 12:45 AM | | Hmmm...I don't have the bolt-on disk adaptor.
You can see my machined out disk mount. Compare this is Incubus'...

| oopps, yeah my adaptor is bolted on | Bulldog Dec 13, 2003 7:01 AM | | forgot about that one. |
