| A few V-10 questions | MR Bill Dec 11, 2003 9:37 PM | | Im about 98% sure that Im going to order a V-10 in a few days. I've got a few simple questions for other owners out there.
1. Dorado or 888? I will race this bike but also do alot of FR.
2. Floating caliper, Worth it?
3. How well does it pedal?
4. can it fit a king steelset HS?
Any insight is appreciated.
Thanks

Dorado first Or 7 inch version of 888.
Bike will be too slack with current 888.
Its already about a half a degree too slack.
2. Floating caliper, Worth it?
No, get the QR and save hundreds of dollars and some pounds.
3. How well does it pedal?
Pedals Excellent. You can sprint through rock gardens.
The bikes only downfalls are:
-Frame is slightly overweight,
-Bike is half a degree to slack
-Bike is half an inch too long.
-Rear end linkage of the bike needs to be rebuilt 2-3X per season.
4. can it fit a king steelset HS?
It can fit it but you don't need it. |
| re: A few V-10 questions | PoserNewbie Dec 12, 2003 10:50 AM | | Do yourself a favor and get the dorado. The v10 geometry complement the dorado very nicely. I used to run a shiver on mine which was not too bad but I felt the HA was a bit too slack for my liking. Switched to a dorado few months ago and the bike is easier to handle on the tighter trails and corners much much better. |
| re: A few V-10 questions | ladge Dec 12, 2003 1:15 PM | | I'd have to say run the Dorado. It is a really nice fork, and is a great match for the frame. I run an Avalanche fork on my v10 but have ridden a v10 with the Dorado and it felt great.
You'd be daffed not to get the floater. Ridden mine with it on, and without, and on the "more rear end downward pressure" setting. It does make a world of difference. That's definitely a no-brainer. So much so that I'm eventually going to slap a rear floater on my single pivot bike too.
It pedals as good as all the reviews say it does.
I run a C.K. steelset on mine as well, yes it fits. Santa Cruz says that it is unnecessary. I destroy everything on my bikes so I went for the extra burly headset.
As far as maintenance goes, that is going to be climate specific. Santa Cruz told me originally, the pivots on the rear end are tough as nails. I've had mine for 1.5 years now and have lots of time in the saddle and race the Mountain States Cup - no sign of wear yet ( in a dry Colorado climate). Just make sure to periodically check the pivot/bushings to make sure that allen head cap screw is snug, I noticed they'll loosen up from time to time. The only one that is somewhat of a pain to get to is the one being "blocked" on the chainguide side of the frame.
One last note - the bolt that holds the rear triangle together - the one next to the warning sticker - check it periodically too. I ended up having to heliocoil mine because the bolt worked it's way out and damaged some threads pretty badly. |

IRONHORSE SGS I HEAR THEY ARE WAY BETTER!!! |
| re: A few V-10 questions | Toby T Dec 15, 2003 10:08 PM | | I understand you ordered a blue one that is a good choice...
IT WILL MATCH THE BRUISES YOU WILL HAVE TRYING TO KEEP UP WITH THE
GOOD BIKES... |
