| Xmas is getting close and I need tire advice! | riggse Dec 23, 2003 7:21 AM | | Finally scored a new UST wheelset for Xmas, but now I am trying to find a great high volume UST tire, reasonable weight (under 1000g)...I have only seen Continental Verticals in 2.3, and Nokian NBX 2.3..any opinions on those two, or any other suggestions? Only 2 shopping days left and I need to find something - or else the inaugural ride is going to be on standard tubes and my 2.5 weirwolfs...
And I am not interested in converting a standard tire to tubeless via the strips, although I will use Stans juice for puncture protections....
Let it fly! |

I'm using one as a front tire, and really like it in the right conditions. Don't be afraid to use a standard tire on your tubless w/ the Stan's sealant, they work great. I use WTB's FR seires tires, they have sticky rubber, sidewall protection, weigh 700-850 grams, and I like the 2.24 deeptread option. I find these tires very confidence inspiring, solid yet not too heavy. |
| so.... | riggse Dec 23, 2003 10:21 AM | | use the WTB's w/o the rimstrip, just the sealant? I've been using a standard Weirwolf 2.5 w. Stans in a conventional rim to this point....they don't burp too much air w/o the strip? |
| so....lose the tubes!! | 1 soulrider Dec 23, 2003 3:48 PM | | Only one burp w/ the UST octopus, none w/ the WTB tires. Run higher psi then usual to avoid burping or rolling the tire off the rim, you don't give up any traction by raising the pressure and you lower rolling resistance. I have had spotty results trying to use your avarage paper wall xc tire w/ Stans, but as long as the tire has some sidwall (doesn't have to be dh caseing) they preform very well w/ proper pressure. I have only had one ride this last year that required me to use a tube. I put a large slice in the sidewall of a tire that the slime could not seal. The whole rest of the year I didn't have to fix one flat, and that is next to priceless. My riding friends grew resentful as they constantly fixed flats. Well, my heckling them didn't help either. I really think going tubeless is the single best upgrade avalible when you consider the cost vs. the benifits. |

Kinda sucks on pavement and its heavy, but I have put 6 months of riding on them easy. Im not really sure about which sizes are available in UST. |
| thanks for all of the input....i decided on.... | riggse Dec 23, 2003 5:11 PM | | Maxxis High Roller 2.35 single plys.....availability of BIG UST tires right now is kinda scarce, so I'm going to convert the Maxxis for now....Stan himself told me they would work...we'll see.... |
