Sunday River will not re-open for....kona clump

DH this summer. I just read offical word about this today. I guess they have no been making a profit from running the lifts for DH and have infact lost money. This defenitly shocked me because last i knew sunday river had a great turn out this year even after highering prices and cutting lift time. Its to bad because they are now no more mountains i know of in maine that offer DH in the summer. Looks like a long 4 hour drive to attitash peak whenever i want to ride DH

Heard this on bustedspoke, a small local new england site. here is what was said

"In the 14 years we've run the MTB Park, we've not actually made money. While there's been extremely good PR coming out of continuing to run the operation, there's been a five figure loss during each year we've operated. Tougher still is the challenge of pumping tens of thousands of dollars in much needed capital out the door every second or third year to update the fleet.

There are four or five of us who have fought really hard to keep the park viable over the last couple of years, but the numbers are tough to ignore, even for us, and they don't lie. We eat, breathe, and sleep this stuff, but even we have to agree that without drastic changes, and a lot of increased financial risk, it'd be tough to operate the MTB Park for another couple of years.

It's a bummer, and we're not happy about it, but we've got to move forward and concentrate on our core business as a ski and snowboard resort. As for our golf course involvement - we don't own the course, but as it sits adjacent to our Jordan Grand Resort Hotel & Conference Center, you can bet that we're hoping it's a huge success. The golf course itself did not have any direct positive or negative impact on our decision.

We sincerely hope to be able to use the time, labor, and resources formerly allocated to the MTB operation in order to better sell and service our winter product and clientele. We're all just as dedicated to that end of the business as we are to the MTB folks. To those of you who've been with us through thick and thin, thank you. To those of you who join us on a regular basis during the winter months, see you on the slopes."

Back to your original post: I'm disappointed in hearing about Sunday River. I never did make it there last year and really wanted to go. I kept putting it off - figuring I'd hit it in the spring.

Oh well - I guess Lynn Woods will have to do, but my need for speed may push me to another DH location before they all close in New England.

Any suggested alternatives to Sunday River?

That absolutely sucks....I was bringing my wife, and two of my buddies up for two weeks this year...WTF!! What good is DH without ANY FRIGGIN MOUNTAINS. I know I spent over a grand there last year myself....the trails were great.

It's a real trajedy if it does come true, personally i'd be devastated,I guess i'd just have to travel further to ride-bromont or plat, maybe if everyone sends SR an email of disgust of this news.

If only the email thing would work. I dont think theres anychance it will, after all what are they gonna choose, making the local DHers happy or stop loosing money. Im really pissed it had to happen this year. I just got a new FS (never got the actually ride a FS there for more thana run, its always been a HT) i planned on buying a season pass and go atleast once a week (3hour drive for me, closest mountain) i was gonna really try the whole racing thing, finally clear some of the trails i never got to. its defenitly a bummer. me and my friends have just been sayin it over and over all winter long "man i cant wait for sunday river to open again its gonna awesome". It really pisses me off that they hope by closing this down to make more profit during the winter. as if they couldnt make back whatever they lost in the summer during ONE WEEK in the winter. im defenitly pretty pissed off but what am i gonna do. i just cant help but get pissed of when i think of it.
