| New Forums -- alternatives? | Sparc Jan 22, 2004 7:23 AM | | The new forums are the worst idea yet. They're visually unattractive, uninuitive, clumsy, and have an interface designed for a 6 year old.
The only reason why we're all going to have to register, is to that we can get bombed with e-mail ads..etc..etc.. Somewhere in the user agreement will be a little line stating that these guys can pass our e-mail addys on to the rest of the planet, thereby letting everyone fill our in-box with absolute rubbish, without it legally being spam. The new anti spam laws and efforts are the whole reason why sites are requiring registration to do anything... in the UA, they, if you want to use the site, have to agree to let them (effectively) spam you.
ick..
So the choices are now Pink bike..or where else? any ideas? |
| I've been wondering the same thing.......... | Nate N Jan 22, 2004 7:53 AM | | I've looked at Hcor, Ridemonkey and a couple others, but they're all the same format. Damn, I guess I'll just have to start actually working now as this is the last day to post to this good board. Hell, I may even get a raise for all the work I'm about to get done.
no more snide comments about moms, trans red bullits, porn movies, or midgets with mullets.
It's a sad day for sure |
| What do you mean "No more snide comments"?!?! | MVRIDER Jan 22, 2004 12:51 PM | | Now they've gone too far!! * stupid little smiley face* |
| 2 most popular board software packages are... | CraigH Jan 22, 2004 1:01 PM | | vBulletin & phpBB
The popular mtn bike boards mention in these threads all run one of these two packages.
MTBR's new boards run on vBulletin for those that care.
I posted in an older thread what the other boards are using. |
| Hey Nate N | TheSherpa Jan 22, 2004 3:55 PM | | biker3 was telling me at school that you like to fuck your mom and have her cum on your fork stantions for lube. JK dog but im gettin a bike soon and me and biker3 are gunna be haeding to Devils Den alot more now. We gots to ride sometime. Is Turkey Mtn. over there any good? |
| Hint: | ikeaboy Jan 22, 2004 9:28 AM | | there's a reason nearly -ALL- web-based forums use a similar format to what they are about to implement on this site...
and chill out with the conspiracy theories.. they are making you look like more of an ass than you probably are. |
| re: New Forums -- alternatives? | Sparc Jan 22, 2004 9:55 AM | | it's nothing to do with conspiracy theories you bonehead.. It' just annoys me the way they word it as if they're doing you a favor.. 'tailored content'..etc..etc.. The content in a message forum is generated by the users. The users come here to interact, share ideas, gain information and sometimes buy/swap/sell bikes and parts. There's no need, aside from wanting to inundate us with advertising, that they need any more information than a username and e-mail addy, the same as you need to post right now.
The whole point of message forums is the messages. At least with the current format, you can see the gist of the responses..etc. to see if you want to go further.. showing a subject, the number of replies, and retarded little icons representing users is really pathetic...
This is a great site.. it's a shame to watch it flush itself down the toilet.
With all the advertising all over the place, am I really to believe they don't make their money from the ads? Do they really need to sell on our information to others to break even? .. |
| Interesting theory...but totally untrue. | sysop Jan 22, 2004 1:21 PM | | MTBR will not sell your email to anyone for purposes of spamming you. For all those who registered on our old boards (this board), we have all those emails, yet we've never spammed them.
The 2 main reasons for the registration on the new boards is accountability and sharing of info with other users (favorite trail, your bike setup, etc...)
I'm sorry you dislike the new system, but I think that if you give it a try for a few days, you will start to see how much better they really are. With the hybrid threaded view, the layout is not all that different from this board.

| Interesting theory...but totally untrue. | Sparc Jan 22, 2004 2:05 PM | | 'sharing of info with other users'? Isn't that what we're all doing a great job of in the forums now? Forgive my niavity here, but it looks like an awful lot of people are able to come in here, express ideas, swap info, buy/sell..etc.. without a registration process. So tell me, exactly what IS the benefit to the end user, for registration if it's not for us to be advertised to? What huge improvements are we going to see in exchange for the registration? I've built too much infrastructure, and designed data gathering systems for too many websites to believe that this is all us to be able to put queer little smily faces next to our posts....valid e-mail addys are worth money.. ..people pay fair amounts of cash for e-mail lists (thus there are many companies out there which do nothing but this, and turn a nice profit). Every time I've worked with a company who was going in this direction, it was a direct result of a cooperative marketing agreement with their partner companies/parent company who decided that each user represented X amount of potential revenue as part of a mailing list.. no more.. no less. |
| Interesting theory...but totally untrue. | ikea Jan 22, 2004 9:42 PM | | i'm a registered member of no less than 10 (albeit carefully selected) online forums, all using my main email address, and have recieved precisely ZERO spam messages on that account. if the grand pursuit of revenues was what drove these forums to exist, i'd expect a bit more spam than that.
the fact is, short of programming their own database and forum software, they -cant- make you happy and keep the board easy to maintain and support. (which brings up the initial argument for upgrading in the first place)
i'd put money on no one giving a shit a couple months down the line. in fact i'd venture to guess it'll make the board MORE popular, because it is going to be more like what the majority of people on the net are used to.
seriously.. if you dislike it that much, leave. |
