| tires for Moab | KarenM Oct 7, 2003 9:59 AM | | First time doing Moab 24 hrs.... do I need slime/Stans in my tires for this course? |

There are definitely sand sections, loose downhill sections (sand, babyhead rock mix) and sharp, ledgy rock section (both uphill and downshill). I think a wider tire helps. I'm planning on running a Mutanoraptor 2.4 on front and a Conti Vertical 2.3 or Bonty Jones 2.2 on back. Not too heavy, pretty good float and can run them at decent psi for traction without overly risking flatting. Those are my thoughts based on last year's race. Supposedly they're gonna change up the course a bit (put the first section back on the road) in order to cut out some of the bad sand sections from last year. Real fun course though. Better than I had expected. You can relax for some big sections, but at least 1/3 of it really keeps your attention. Hopefully the weather is good. The temp fluctuation from day to night is pretty extreme out in the desert. It'll likely peak at over 80 during the day and then dip into the 20's at night. Sorry for the rambling reponse! Getting excited! My biggest challenge will be trying to rest on Fri. Last year I rode Poison Spider and the course on Fri and then did 4 laps Sat/Sun. It's hard to not hit one of the classics if you're out there! S |

I'm glad to hear some postitive things about the course, all I've heard is negatives - "You're not gonna like that course" "The course sucks" "Ride in sand or walk your bike, that's it" "I'm not doing it again" :-) I'm really looking forward to it even still!! I got some nice fat tires for the sand and a great attitude for it -what more is there?? |
| That should do it, especially at 3AM! (nm) | DSR Oct 8, 2003 8:49 AM | | |
