Thinking of first 100-miler...(5 posts)

Thinking of first 100-miler...Crash_FLMB
Nov 6, 2003 8:34 AM
I ride a few 24 hour races a year and love them. Usually on a team, never solo. I ride regularly 3 X's a week. Our weekend ride is usually a 3-4 hour ride. Anybody have any tips on how to train or prepare for your first 100-miler?

Thanks in advance.

To train for a 100 miler, you need to estimate how long it's going to take you to do the ride, then gradually build up your saddle time until you can ride comfortably for that length of time.

Most of my friends and I find that long distance road riding - centuries (100 mile rides) and double centuries (200 mile rides) - are great training for 100 mile mtb races. They prepare your body for long hours in the saddle without beating you up. They also increase your confidence, and let you practice pacing, hydration, and fueling.

Here are some nutrition and training links:

each of the last three years. Road ridingis pretty boring though. Easy enough but boring. It is a good way to get lots of saddle time though. I did the last 100 this year in 7.5 hours. That was with almost 1.5 hours in stops. I don't know if that's fast or slow.

I was able to talk 3 other guys into it. So one of us is going to get the Friel book and start training.

Thanks for the web sites and the yahoo group. I think I'll join that.
Back to back rides are good...Zignzag

I like to test myself before a big ride by riding 45% or so of the big ride on back to back days. For example, if the big ride was 100 miles with 10,000 feet of climbing, I'd do roughly 45 miles with 4,500 ft of climbing on back to back days. If I feel good at the end of the second ride, then I know I'm prepared to the big ride.

Road riding can be good or bad depending on where you're at.

Which 100 miler are you thinking of doing?

We're going to try to register for the Cream Puff in Oregon. We're also doing a 24 hr race in Spokane and Boise. The one in Snoqualmie (Seattle area) was cancelled this year which bummed us out. But if it's back up and running, we're going to do that again.
