Long Distance Shorts!(12 posts)

Long Distance Shorts!DrClarke

Here's a strange question, and I couldn't find a proper section to post this. I ride for distanace and endurance, so I figure I'd post this here.

Currently I wear some Fox baggies and some no cushin spandex/lycra type shorts underneath to keep 'things' steady. The Fox baggies have some padding, but it's not much and it's probably also been worn to nothing since I've had them for two years.

My problem. The longer my rides are getting, the more my ass is hurting. My longest non-stop ride so far has been a 52 mile ride. I literally couldn't sit on the saddle at the end. My ass is like skin and bones. No cushin. My weight fluctuates between 125-130.

So I'm thinking about investing some good $$$ in some real solidly padded lycra shorts to ease my pain.... Only my research isn't proving to fruitful yet. It's a field I'm not to familiar with. I'm thinking a good pair of padded lycras and some sort of tougher shell on the outside because I do indeed seem to fly off my bike quite frequently.

Anybody with some solid pointers?
Performance has their Century Gel shorts on sale...Zignzag

They're my favorites, but shorts are kind of like saddles; the one you love, others may hate. They're good for about ten long rides before the gel starts to shift, so save them for big rides. Don't put them in the drier.

I also like the Pearl Izumi Ultrasensors:

They cost more, but will last longer.

Oh thanks for the heads up on Gel type shorts. I was actually leaning towards gel. Does this mean all gel shorts will mold after awhile and become worthless?
Don't get those...Metroid

Performance shorts are okay but not great. I've used serveral generations of their Elite shorts. I thought the Century shorts were crap and immediately returned them. I ordered up some Voler shorts last year and needless to say I won't be using Performance shorts anymore. The Volers are MUCH nicer quality in materials and construction and they are just as inexpensive. They are just as nice as other top quality shorts like Pearl Izumi, Castelli, etc.

You can get the lightweight training shorts as listed below. These might make nice undershorts with some surf/camp shorts overtop. Or you can get the regular 8oz lycra IMBA shorts for $35 everyday, and $5 goes to support IMBA. LONG LIVE LONG RIDES!

Say, under 3 hours or so. Heck they're only $29. Give them a try!

they have the 6 oz training shorts for 29.99 (i think this is the right price) and they have the same liner as the more expensive shorts they carry..

Yea I have used both the Performance shorts and the Velowear shorts. The Velowear far far far exceeded the Performance shorts and there wasn't really a price difference.

I like Voler shorts as well, but the Castellis and Pearl Izumis are very good as well. My favorite setup if I'm gonna be in the saddle for 8 to 24 hours would be Orca triathlon shorts (very thin with thin soft chamois) under a pair of Volers.

Great fitting shorts with a great shammy. It actually took a bit to get used to due to the cut and padding, but now will not ride anything else. They are pricey if you have to pay retail. Check around and see what you can find.
I'll 2nd that!ignazjr

The 3D Chamois in the Microsensors is great! It's got a dual density foam pad, with synthetic leather bonded to the top. Very comfy for long distances/times.
I'll 3rd that!Jeromelo

Assos makes some great shorts as do Castelli. Roach makes great baggies that are bomb-proof and unlined. They ride a little hot though.

What bike are you riding and with what components? That makes a huge difference as well.
