HELP!!! My knees are screaming!(5 posts)

HELP!!! My knees are screaming!Gabriel
Dec 14, 2003 5:04 PM
Hello fellow bikers,

I'm experiencing severe knee pain when I get back from long rides. I don't have any pain while riding, and I don't use clipless pedals. I do feel large ammounts of pain when trying to climb the stairs to the front porch when I get home. My knees creak loudly when I walk up or down stairs, especially down. THen after a few days it goes away till I ride again. Should I see a doctor or is there somehting else I can do to stop the pain?

Thanks,

Gabriel

if not, maybe you've just stressed them more than they were ready for. On the other hand if all you do is long rides, maybe you have an overuse injury and just need some rest.

Lots of unknowns from your brief post, so it could be a number of thins.

Try some ice after your rides to reduce inflamation, at least.

Long rides are the normal thing for me. I used to ride about 50 miles every other day, then I got a job where I can't do that anymore and when I'm working I stand for 8 hours a day. I never had this problem until I started designing a XC mountainbike with 11" of suspension travel and had to get another job to support it. At my origional job I jsut sat around and talked to peole on the phone. Now I'm doing landscaping as well to cover the extra cost of building a carbon fiber bike in my garage. Now I have knee pain only going up and down stars, otherwise they just creak a lot.

The funny thing is that today, they don't hurt much at all. Yesterday, I went on an epic ride with my female friend and we went about 34 miles. Could the lack of use been causing the pain? I don't creak except on stairs, and I have a little pain there. I felt no pain at all while on the bike, just fatigue. My profomance has suffered greatly though!! I couldn't catch Sara on any of the hills I used to smoke her on...

Thanks for input.

Gabriel

Hello,

Have had and solved some knee pain issues in the past. It all came down to fore/aft saddle position relative to the center line of a leveled pedal. Please tell where the pain is. Left, right, front, back, tip of quad, under knee cap, below knee cap?

If I have had pain in the same area, I can tell you what worked for me.

Get to a bike shop that offers a bike-fitting service. Your problem will most likely be seat height, or seat fore/aft positioning, maybe even shoe-cleat positioning. Better get it seen to quick smart. If you live nowhere near a shop, get your tape measure out and go to www.wrenchscience.com for help in bike fit (it's free.)
