| help - need part for xt 8 speed shifter | grundy Oct 10, 2001 9:27 AM | | I have an 8 speed rear shifter (M739) that sustained some damage last night. I bailed off my bike, my shorts caught the shifter lever, and I broke the pawl that engages the ratchet which winches in cable when you push the thumb lever to advance to a larger gear. sorry for the muddled descritpion, but I don't really know what I am talking about...
my question is, where can I find spare parts for this shifter? I remember seeing a catalog at friends house which sold all sorts of spare parts for repairing bike components, it even had a lot of exploded views. does anybody know of a similar catalog or web site?
It looks like I need to replace the thumb lever assembly, in case anybody has one lying around.
thanks for any help! |
| yer screwed... | Dan Oct 10, 2001 9:46 AM | | You can't get small parts for a shifter. Shimano doesn't sell 'em and neither does anybody else. If you can get a new pawl made by a machine shop, that's your only solution. Otherwise, buy a new pod. Or find a buddy with a broken one, and try to scavenge that part from it.
That's the joy that is ShimaNO. Sorry, man.... |

| spare shifter...... | heff® Oct 10, 2001 1:28 PM | | ....if you can find one, is a good idea. Check Cambria and Pricepoint, in their closeout bins, you can find 8 speed pods relatively cheap, and probably for less than Shimano would charge you for the part, if they sold it.

| one other option | Roy Oct 10, 2001 2:33 PM | | One thing - you can use the pawl from a left (front) 8 speed shifter which should be relatively easy to find. I can confirm doing this.
I would also venture to guess you can use the pawl from a 9 speed shifter (left or right) but I don't have one to take apart and confirm. |
| www.loosescrews.com | JmZ Oct 10, 2001 6:43 PM | | They still exist and they have pod parts. Cheaper than buying a new set of shifters, but not by much.
Good luck!
