Help!! My casette will not free spin anymore. How do I take off the casette so as to fix this problem. Has anyone had this problem or have any idea what it is? Ok then I have a Raleigh M55 (it's shiny red). Please help as my bike is very lonely without me. thanks Joe

freewheel. The freewheel is the housing under (or rather under the housing) that the cassette is pressed onto. You'll need a cassette removal tool and a chain whip or similar device to hold the cassette as you break the retaining ring loose with the tool. Once the cassette is off, the freewheel is contained in the splined housing that the cassette was attached to (the actual freewheel mechanism is contained in the housing). The chances are good that the free wheel is simply worn out and will need to be replaced. But there is a possibility that it may only need a good cleaning and re-lube. However, this is not a job for the faint hearted or the novice. I would recommend if you haven't done freewheel service before that you take it to your LBS and let them do it.

That was very helpful. I am in the process of making a tool to fit the splines. Do you have any idea where I can buy a chain whip or what it looks like as I can fabricate just about anything. Thanks for your help!
