sram chain w/ shimano crankset problems(2 posts)

sram chain w/ shimano crankset problemschili

i've had the steelman built for a week now, but have yet to ride it. why? because i couldn't keep the chain on in the middle ring/big cog combo. the chainline was too extreme, causing the chain to continually drop down into the granny gear.

after much frustration, help from various mechanics (with no sucess) and multiple phone calls with mr. steelman, the problem was finally solved last night, or so i hope. the build kit i purchased came with a sram chain. everything else was shimano, including the new octalink xt crankset. well apparently, only a shimano chain will run properly on the new crankset.

I don't think it was a problem before, and i don't know if it is with the latest ones, but it is with mine. has anyone ever heard of or experienced this problem? after putting a shimnao hg92 chain on last night, the problem seems to have ceased. it jumped off a few times in the beginning, but i think it was becuase i had connected the link to tight. after loosening it up, it has stayed on. tonight will be the real test, and the first taste of dirt on the new ride. wish me luck.

I've been using SRAM chains on Shimano drivetrains for years without incident.
