Removal and installation of Shimano CN-HG92 Chain(2 posts)

Removal and installation of Shimano CN-HG92 Chainplahn

First time working with this chain and am a bit confused by the difference between "link" pins and the reinforced "connecting" pin.

For example, to remove my old chain (the same type) I assume I need to drive out the old "connecting" pin. Correct or not?

What is the procedure for removing links (if I find to be necessary) from the new chain? Can you use a link extractor to remove the "link" pins? The Shimano service instructions talk about "making a cut at some place other than the place where the chain has been joined using a reinforced connecting pin or an end pin." OK, if you make a cut, you still have links in place on either side of the cut???

Any info is greatly appreciated as I live in Egypt and have no access to knowledgeable mechanics. Thanks

You will need to break the chain at some spot other than a connecting pin (black in color). Once broken, you will remove however many links and reconnect the chain with a new connecting pin. Supposedly the connecting pins are just as strong as the factory pins but I don't believe it. That's why I've been using SRAM/Sachs chains with the PowerLink.
