Shimano freehub dustshield(3 posts)

Shimano freehub dustshieldSteve Manthey

Recently I was servicing the XTR freehub on my bike and in the process, I destroyed the outer dustshield on the freehub trying to remove it. I ordered a new new dustshield from my LBS and I received an aftermarket reusable aluminum O-ring sealed piece. It looked like a good idea except when I assembled the thing I noticed that I'm not able to use the original rubber seal that is located on the bearing cone because the new dustshield has a smaller bore. The package states it is for "1999 all Shimano 9 speed". No alternate seal was supplied either. Seems weird. Has anyone out there run into this yet? Any help would be great. Thanks!

The Third Hand / Loose Screws catalog has 2 seals. One says it fits all 9 SP and all XTR. The other says it fits hubs with a soft rubber seal on the cone, except 9 SP and all XTR. You might want to try the second one, or I guess you could drill out the dustsheild you have.

Thank you NCN! I talked with my LBS today and they said they would make some calls and try to find out more. I passed your info onto them.
