HollowTech XT cranks- What bottom bracket and how much?Yellowsub1962

I just picked up a GT iDrive 1.0 and it needs a new cartridge, my LBS is not cooperating too much with me. They told me they need to see the part and it's between $50 and $70 for the bottom bracket cartridge.. and that there's 2 different ones. How do I tell which one I have and Is this a special cartridge, or are they tring to screw me? I'm used to the $30, not $70..also can I get it cheaper anywhere if thats the right price?

Thanks in advance,
Peter
You can find one for $25 to $30 most places...næstep

But I'm not sure were you'll find the size info, short of pulling out your old one. Generally, you'll want to pick the same shell size as your current square taper, but choose the next larger spindle length (to maintain the same chainline).

....where are you at? A whole new ES-70 bottom bracket can be had for $35-$40 at most places. As far as the LBS needing to see the part, about the only thing they'd need to see is the size, which is printed on the BB shell. I think the GT is a 73x118, but don't quote me, and don't order one based on that. Pull your old one, and look at it. It'll have the size on it.

Whatever you do, DON'T let them sell you any other splined bottom bracket, the ES-70 is the ONLY one that will work on your cranks. Period.

Thanks næstep and heff...I'm going to pull it and just get the same one, since there apparently isn't any upgrade avail..

Thanks again,

OOps... If you've already got XT splined cranks, disregard what I said...næstep

For some reason, I assumed you were upgrading from square taper. Yeah, your best bet is to go with what you've already got, assuming that the chainline was good and the setup worked for you.

so I would assume that if I'm able to shift through all the gears and the chain doesn't come off when decending, bouncing, jumping, etc.. the chainline is ok as it sits now?? or is there more to it than that?

Thanks again,

Or, more precisely...næstep

...put your chain on your middle ring and your middle cog. As you sight down the chain from the rear of the bike, it will be obvious if it follows a straight path, or if it diverges to the left or to the right.

But you're right: if shifting is fine, why fix what isn't broken?
