| Proper RD Tension | The Squeaky Wheel Oct 12, 2001 2:06 PM | | Can someone please tell me the correct way to set the B-tension screw on my RD. I currently have the screw out and the pulley does not touch the casette. However, when I pedal backwards the chain often derails. I'm probably setting it incorrectly, so your help is appreciated.
Thanks.

| re: Proper RD Tension | xerxes Oct 13, 2001 4:18 PM | | Shift into the small ring and large cog. Loosen the B tension screw until the chain at the upper guide pulley barely touches the large cog. Rotate the crank backwards and check for rubbing. Tighten the B screw until the rubbing just stops. It's set. You want it as close to the large cog as possible without rubbing. Don't touch it again unless you change large cogs and thus change the distance to the guide pulley. |
| Xerxes... | The Squeaky Wheel Oct 14, 2001 4:55 AM | | Thanks. But the screw is loosed all the way and still the cog/casette distance is really not that close. I've tried taking out a link, but then I have trouble with some of the extreme gear ranges ( not that I go into those gears all that much).
Maybe I'll remove a link and try again.
Any other suggestions welcome. |
| Could be | xerxes Oct 14, 2001 11:21 AM | | the spring tension is blown and you need to tighten that up. Is it a new RD? If it only derails occasionally when you pedal backwards, why worry about it? Screwing with the springs is a pain. |
| Let me clarify.... | The Squeaky Wheel Oct 14, 2001 2:11 PM | | It doesn't derail when I run it backwards. I actually get horrible chain suck, and it only seems to happen in the smaller cogs (higer gears).
the RD is not new, but was purchased in May. Has about 1200 miles of rough XC. Not much of a problem really, I just like to dial things in perfectly.
Am going to be getting one of Charles Coker's custom Racer-X soon, so I'll get a new RD then.
Thanks for the help. |
