long cage vs. medium cage deraileur, whats the difference?grooverider

i just finished installing my new 9spd drivetrain to find that the rear deraileur' cage scrapes the chain no matter what position it is in. it only scrapes at the very bottom and it seems to be because the the deraileur sits at an odd angle from the rest of the system. is this because i've installed it wrong or is there an adjustment i don't know about? then i thought it might have something to do with the fact that it is the long cage version. oh by the way its a shimano xt rear deraileur. any help is much appreciated, thanks.
