What are the differences between xt and lx derailleurs?Jeff M.

Can anyone explain the differences to me. The fronts in particular, they look identical. The rears look diferent, but how different are they in function? Also how well do front 9-speed deraillers work with 8-speed? I'd like to save some money, but not if it hinders performance.

there is absolutely no difference between a 9 speed drive train and 8 speed other than the cassette & chain. Both of which are narrower than the 8 speed version.
As for difs between LX & XT the only real dif is weight. And not that much either. It probably has to due with the hardware that each is one is constructed with, XT being lighter. As for performance, I've used both and noticed no difference between the two either way. Hope this helps.

LX is 6000 series alumiyoominumiyummy, XT is 7000 series.

Chainring ramps are also slightly different between 8 and 9 speed rings, but not hugely, and shouldn't cause a problem. 9 speed front mech cages are also .5mm narrower than 8 speed.

Performance is about the same, though, between LX and XT.

the 9 spd cranks have the same ring spacing...the 9spd rings just have thinner ring teeth and deeper (thicker you might say?) ramps and pins to catch the narrower chain.

9 spd derailers genrally have larger pulleys too (11 tooth)
