| Front Derailure Problem | BK Oct 14, 2001 1:49 PM | | I have an XT drivetrain with an XTR Front Derailure and a Sram chain. Problem is the front derailure goes out of wack every two or three rides. The tip off usually comes with "chain suck" Any suggestions on the cause of the problem or the repair?
Thanks

| what type of crank? | heff® Oct 14, 2001 4:40 PM | | I know, wierd question....but......
The XTR front mech is designed for the larger, 24/34/36 (or variation) standard drive rings. If you're running it on a compact (22/32/42 or 44) crankset, the adjustment is gonna be a bit trickier.
In the meantime, check to make sure your cable is tensioned properly, and that the low stop screw is adjusted right. If your screw is out just a bit, and you're allowing cable tension to stop the derailleur at the low ring, sometimes it will move farther back on a downshift than the previous time.
There's not much to go wrong with a front mech, though, so just check your setup to make sure it's properly done. Also, check your chainrings for wear, perhaps your granny ring is a bit worn in the tooth.

| what type of crank? | BK Oct 18, 2001 5:22 PM | | I have the standard drive rings. The chain seems to ride on the bottom of the front derailure cage rather than above it. Lowering the derailure prevents a shift to the big ring. Had the bike to three different shops with no permanent improvement. No wear on the chainrings; they and the bike are only two months old. Thanks for the inuput and any other suggestions. |
